  • Fact Check: AI-Generated Image Of a Baby Misrepresented As Survivor Of Nepal-Tibet Border Earthquake Following the earthquake on the Nepal-Tibet border, a picture of a girl went viral on social media, claiming that she survived the disaster. However, Vishvas News investigated and found that the picture was AI-generated. - By: Pallavi Mishra - Published: Jan 15, 2025 at 04:14 PM New Delhi (Vishvas News). A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Nepal-Tibet border on January 7, 2025, claiming the lives of at least 95 people and injuring over 60 others. The quake caused widespread damage, with many buildings collapsing and reduced to rubble. In the aftermath, a picture of a girl trapped in the debris has been circulating on social media, accompanied by claims that she survived the disaster. Vishvas News investigation revealed that this picture is AI-generated and is being mistakenly shared as real. What is the viral post? Facebook user ‘Viral Sikkim‘ (archive link) shared this picture on January 8, 2025 with the caption, “This little girl survived on yesterday’s Earthquake morning on the 7th, when more than 288 people lost their lives and more than 3000 buildings were destroyed in Tibet, China near Mount Everest, this little girl survived the smoke and debris of the terrible earthquake as if she was reborn. A bright lamp of life burns within the bricks of the ruins. Amid the earthquake-ravaged cities, these children will grow into plants of hope, just as the sun begins to shine after a dark night. Nature was destroyed, but this child won the world by singing the sweet song of the future. ” Investigation To investigate this post, we examined the picture closely. Upon closer inspection, we noticed that the girl in the image has six fingers on one hand, and her eyes appear to be missing. This raised suspicions that the picture might be AI-generated. Using the AI image detection tool Hive Moderation, the image showed an 88% probability of being AI-created. Additionally, AI image detection tool Site Engine also indicated an 89% probability of it being AI-created. We also spoke to AI expert Ansh Mehra on this matter and he confirmed that the picture is AI-created, citing clear indicators, such as the girl’s hands and eyes. The Facebook user ‘Viral Sikkim’ who shared this post, has over 16000 followers. Conclusion: Following the earthquake on the Nepal-Tibet border, a picture of a girl went viral on social media, claiming that she survived the disaster. However, Vishvas News investigated and found that the picture was AI-generated. - Claim Review : This little girl was rescued from the debris after Nepal-Tibet Border Earthquake - Claimed By : Facebook user ‘Viral Sikkim‘ - Fact Check : False Know the truth!
