  • Fact Check: TN police attacking farmers? Nope, this video shows lathi-charge on BJP workers in Bengal India Today Fact Check found that this video shows the West Bengal Police assaulting Bharatiya Janata Party workers. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows West Bengal police assaulting BJP workers in North 24 Parganas. On February 13, farmers in Tamil Nadu expressed solidarity with the farmer unions participating in the “Delhi Chalo” protests and criticised the police for trying to stop the farmers from entering the national capital. Following that, a video of police personnel lathi-charging people was shared by many online. Sharing this video, an X user wrote, “Tamil Nadu farmers who stood in solidarity with farmers protest 2024 were brutally beaten by police in Tamil Nadu.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this video shows the West Bengal Police assaulting Bharatiya Janata Party workers. OUR PROBE We noticed the logo of news agency ANI in the video. So, we checked ANI’s social media accounts to find out if this happened during the farmers’ protest. We found that this viral video was shared on ANI’s X account on February 13. As per the post, in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, police resorted to lathi-charging to disperse protesting BJP workers. We also found this video on The Times of India’s X account with the same details. We found multiple reports about this incident published on February 14. As per CNBC-TV18’s report, BJP workers and the police clashed in Basirhat in North 24 Parganas on February 13, amid protests over allegations of sexual harassment in Basirhat’s Sandeshkhali. Section 144 has been imposed in the area to maintain law and order. Reportedly, women in Sandeshkhali have been protesting for weeks over alleged sexual harassment by Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh. In the video, one can see protestors holding BJP flags and Bangla shop signages. People could also be heard speaking in Bangla. We also searched for police lathi-charging farmers in Tamil Nadu and did not find any credible news reports saying that. Thus, it’s clear that this video has nothing to do with Tamil Nadu farmers.
