India Today Fact Check
This video is not from Afghanistan or Pakistan. It shows a Kurdish militant shooting down a Turkish helicopter in May 2016.
A video making the rounds on social media purports to show an Afghani soldier shooting down a Pakistani chopper using a shoulder-fired missile.
The video shows the missile striking the helicopter's tail, causing it to spin out of control, explode, and plunge to the ground. An X user wrote with sharing it: "Breaking Newsâ. Afghan forces shot down Pakistan Army Helicopter along the disputed Durand line in Kurram." The archive of a similar Facebook post can be seen here.
India Today Fact Check found that the video is eight years old and shows a militant group taking down a Turkish army helicopter.
OUR PROBE
We found no credible news reports about any recent attack on a Pakistani chopper by Afghan forces. However, a Reuters report noted that a helicopter used by the Afghanistan army crashed while attempting an emergency landing in central Afghanistan on May 15, killing one person and injuring 12.
A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a Mirror UK report dated May 24, 2016, which featured the same video. According to the report, it showed a Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK militant launching an attack on a Turkish army helicopter. The PKK is a militia group that operates in Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey — it’s been designated a terrorist organisation in the latter.
We also found a Washington Post report from May 14, 2016, which mentioned that the attack took place in the mountains of southeastern Turkey.
The Washington Post reported that Turkish officials initially attributed this helicopter crash in the Hakkari province to a technical failure. However, they refused to comment after the video of this attack was uploaded to the YouTube channel Gerilla TV, reportedly affiliated with the militant group. Although the video has since been deleted, its archive can be seen here.
Thus, it is evident that an old video from Turkey was falsely shared as Afghan forces taking down a Pakistani helicopter.
