Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video of the Afghan cricketers' celebration is from 2023. It has been edited to add the “Vande Mataram” chants. Afghanistan sealed its first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final spot with a thrilling victory against Bangladesh on June 25. India also had a role to play in the making of this history, as its win over Australia on June 24 cleared the way for Afghanistan to punch its semi-final tickets. Now, a video of the Afghanistan squad seemingly chanting “Vande Mataram” is making the rounds on social media. A banner of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup can be seen behind the players. Sharing this video on Instagram, one person wrote, “Afghanistan team is happy. Afganistan team proudly says Vande Mataram after India beating Australia in T20 world cup super 8.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this video from 2023 has been edited to add the “Vande Mataram” chants. OUR PROBE A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a news report containing its screenshot. This MSN report from October 24, 2023, stated that the Afghan team celebrated its victory in a one-day international against Pakistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. We then found the original video shared on October 23, 2023, by Mohammad Nabi, former captain of the Afghanistan cricket team. In the original clip, the players could be heard cheering together along with religious chants of “Allah-Hu-Akbar”. This video was also shared by several social media users along with MSN journalist Faizul Haque at the time. According to news reports, the Afghan team was celebrating its third-ever win at a Cricket World Cup. It was also Pakistan’s first loss in a one-day international (ODI) against Afghanistan, which was on the ninth rank at the time. Videos of both, players and fans, celebrating emerged on social media following this victory. It is thus, clear that an old video of Afghan players was edited to show them chanting “Vande Mataram” following the team’s entry into the T20 World Cup semi-finals.
