  • FACT CHECK: Did The Club Q Suspect’s Grandfather Tweet His Condolences To The Victims? A post shared on Facebook purports the grandfather of Colorado Springs Shooter, California Republican Assemblyman Randy Voepel, tweeted his condolences to the victims. Verdict: False The tweet is taken out of context. The assemblyman was tweeting about another incident that predated the Club Q shooting. Fact Check: Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, opened fire on an LGBTQ club Club Q in Colorado Springs on Nov. 17 leaving five dead and 17 injured, NBC News reported. The suspects mother, Laura Voepel, was reportedly arrested after denying police entry into her home following the shooting, NBC News reported. The Facebook post purportedly shows a screenshot of a tweet from Randy Voepel, though it does not feature a timestamp or options to share as tweets normally do. “Sending my thoughts and prayers,” the alleged tweet reads. The tweet is taken out of context. The original tweet, made April 27, Voepel shared his condolences for a California Highway Patrol officer that was shot on duty in April 2022. Voepel’s tweet is in direct response to a tweet from KUSI News, a San Diego news channel, reporting on the officer. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the officer and their family 💙🕊 https://t.co/AAitdGrw1j — Asm. Randy Voepel (@RandyVoepel) April 28, 2022 “Sending my thoughts and prayers to the officer and their family,” the real tweet reads. (RELATED: Does This Photo Show The Colorado Springs Shooting Suspect?) There are no credible news reports that suggest Voepel has made a statement about the shooting. The tweet does not appear on Voepel’s verified Twitter account . Voepel has been confirmed by local news station CBS 8 San Diego as the grandfather of the shooter but according to reports he has not commented on the incident in the media or on his Twitter account. This is not the first time fabricated tweets have been attributed to public figures. Check Your Fact recently debunked a viral post that claimed Elon Musk called Twitter users upset by Trump’s reinstatement a ‘bunch of babies.’
