  • Fact Check: India was not declared as largest source of terrorism in Asia Terrorism is the threat or use of violence to intimidate or coerce in the pursuit of political or ideological goals. T Claim : India was declared as the largest source of terrorism in Asia by a European research surveyFact : The claim is false. No such report exists, and no online reports are availableTerrorism is the threat or use of violence to intimidate or coerce in the pursuit of political or ideological goals. Terrorism can take many forms, including bombings, armed assaults, hijackings, or hostage-taking. Its targets can also vary and can be aimed at civilians, state actors, or public infrastructure. Meanwhile, a few social media users are sharing a post claiming that India has been declared the largest source of terrorism in Asia by a European Research survey. These posts share the image of Indian Prime Minister Modi. Here is the archive link of the claim. Fact Check: The claim is False. No such reports have been published anywhere by any European research study. When we searched using the keywords ‘India has been declared the largest source of Terrorism in Asia by a European research study’, but we did not find any such study published online. Further research showed the Global Terrorism Index in 2024, GTI is produced by the leading international think tank the Institute of Economics & Peace (IEP), and has been published annually for the last eleven years. It is the most comprehensive resource on global terrorism trends and uses multiple factors to calculate its score, including the number of incidences, fatalities, injuries, and hostages, and combines it with conflict and socio-economic data to provide a holistic picture of terrorism. Deaths from terrorism increased by 22% to 8,352 deaths in 2023 and are now at their highest level since 2017. Burkina Faso has become the country most impacted by terrorism – the first time a nation other than Afghanistan or Iraq topped the Global Terrorism Index (GTI). Almost 2,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso from 258 incidents, accounting for nearly a quarter of all terrorist deaths globally, according to the GTI, which provides a comprehensive summary of the key global trends and patterns in terrorism and is produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP). The impact of terrorism in Burkina Faso has increased every year since 2014, with terrorism also surging in its neighbours, Mali and Niger. In Burkina Faso in 2023, deaths from terrorism were up 68 per cent. Over all in 2023, deaths from terrorism increased by 22 percent to 8,352 deaths and are now at their highest level since 2017, although they remain 23 per cent lower than at their peak in 2015. Excluding the October 7th Hamas attack in the Middle East, deaths would have still been up by five percent. According to statista which ranks terrorist activity across the world, in 2022, Afghanistan topped the Global Terrorism Index. While the rise and fall of the Islamic State and its caliphate in Syria and Iraq received much attention during the 2010s, there has been increased terrorist activity in other parts of the world in recent years, particularly in some African countries such as Burkina Faso, Somalia, and Mali. According to Indiatvnews, India ranks 14th in the GTI 2024 report, slipping down by one spot from last year. It is among the top ten countries with the largest decreases in deaths from terrorism. Bangladesh ranked at 32, while China ranked 73 in the index. The most notable improvements in terrorism occurred in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hence, the claim that a European Research study declared that India has been declared the largest source of terrorism in Asia is False.
