  • Fact Check: Old Croatian video falsely shared as celebrations in El Salvador after Bukele win India Today Fact Check found that this 2020 video shows the birthday celebration of Torcida, the supporters' group of Croatian football club Hajduk Split. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This 2020 video shows the 70th anniversary celebration of Torcida Split, the supporters’ group of Croatian football club Hajduk Split. El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele on February 4 secured a thumping victory in the country’s elections. It was speculated that he is going to win a second term after his administration suspended civil liberties to conduct a brutal crackdown on criminal gangs in the South American country which resulted in a fall in the murder rate, once the highest in the world. On February 4, supporters of Bukele celebrated as fireworks went off in the sky in front of the National Palace after the presidential election in San Salvador. "All together the opposition was pulverized," Bukele told his supporters. Now, a video of spectacular fireworks, allegedly set off to celebrate Bukele’s victory, is being shared online. Sharing the video, an X user wrote, “El Salvador, Fireworks erupt in the streets as President Nayib Bukele is re-elected in a historic landslide.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video shows the anniversary celebrations of Torcida, a fan group of the Croatian football club Hajduk Split. OUR PROBE A reverse image search of screengrabs from the viral video led us to the same clip uploaded to YouTube on October 29, 2020. The video was titled, “Hajduk split 70 years.” This means that the actual video predates El Salvador's Presidential elections by more than three years. HNK Hajduk Split is a Croatian professional football club based in the city of Split. We searched about this incident on YouTube and found a video that resembles the viral clip uploaded to a channel named “KN Torcida Split '' on October 28, 2020. The video’s title translates to, “70 years of Torcida/Because of one love.” We searched for media reports that covered this incident and found a video report by Yahoo Finance published in November 2020, which featured photos of similar-looking fireworks. As per the report, Torcida, a famous supporters’ group of the Croatian football club Hajduk Split, celebrated its 70th birthday at the stroke of midnight by lighting up the city of Split with flares and fireworks. Thus, it is more than clear that an old video from Croatia was falsely shared as reelection celebrations for El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele.
