  • Last Updated on September 26, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post in Sinhalese language claims a miracle porridge kills cancer cells. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Mostly False. No evidence confirms coconut milk, cinnamon bark, garlic, curry powder and Katupila leaves kill cancer cells to completely cure the condition. The Claim A Facebook post in Sinhalese language claims ‘An amazing porridge that kills cancer cells. Take a cup of coconut milk, put it in a pot, put it on the stove, add a little cinnamon bark, garlic, and curry powder to it and mix it well. Then add a cup of juice of katupila leaves and a cup of boiled water of katupila stalks’. Same post has been shared by several social media users. Fact Check Can a homemade porridge recipe cure cancer? No. A homemade porridge containing coconut milk, cinnamon bark, garlic, curry powder and Katupila leaves cannot completely cure cancer. We found scant scientific evidence that shows coconut milk, cinnamon bark, garlic, curry powder and Katupila leaves induce apoptosis to kill cancer cells. However, the evidence is not enough to establish them as the cure for all types of cancer that can replace standard treatment. This has been further confirmed by Dr Sarthak Moharir, Radiation Oncologist, HCG Cancer Centre, Vadodara. He said “Homemade recipes cannot cure cancer. The ingredients as mentioned in the claim are common in South Asian cuisine. If this would have been the case, there would be zero occurrence of cancer cases in South Asian countries.” Standard treatment of cancer includes surgery, therapies and drug intake. A complete cure is not only limited to killing cancer cells but inhibiting the formation of newer ones and preventing their quick multiplication. Can diet cure cancer? No. Diet alone cannot completely cure cancer. However, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), including diet-based practices, are considered to have some curative properties. But we do not have enough scientific evidence that can confirm CAM is better than standard treatment procedures. As of now, CAM is considered by many to improve their quality of life with less severe symptoms. Exploring unconventional treatments for cancer, such as homemade porridge, leads us to consider the various health practices in regions like Pakistan’s Hunza Valley, known for their unique lifestyle and diet. A social media post also claims that soursop can treat cancer to cure the condition. Relying only on home remedies to cure cancer and not seek standard treatment can worsens the condition because it allows more time for cancer cells to spread throughout the body. This is one of the major reasons why cancer is extremely difficult to treat in the later stages.
