Fact Check:
A TeluguPost investigation confirms the viral video depicts Arunachal residents protesting the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system and immigration policies. The protest was not directed against the Indian army, nor did it involve demands for the state to merge with China.
Reverse image search on the viral video keyframes led us to the video posted by the Arunachal Headlines Facebook (archived here) account, which was posted on May 15, 2026. The title “Massive Protest March Rocks National Highway Over ILP Issue.”
The Indian government issues an Inner Line Permit (ILP), an official travel document that permits an Indian citizen to enter a protected area for a restricted amount of time. Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland are the four northeastern states that require it.
Northeast Today's Facebook account (archived here) also posted visuals related to the viral video and captioned “Protesters resorted to stone-pelting and blocked National Highway-415 during a bandh in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) on Friday, prompting police to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd, officials said. The bandh, called by the Scheduled Tribe Bachao Andolon Committee (STBAC), had begun at 5 am on Thursday and continued for 36 hours, disrupting normal life across the capital region.” It also reports that demonstrators marching from Naharlagun towards Itanagar turned violent, and protesters blocked the National Highway-415, forcing police to use tear gas to restore order.
The Assam Tribune reports that the STBAC called for the bandh and demanded that the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system be fully digitized and strictly enforced in order to prevent unlawful infiltration into the state. Along with advocating for the defense of tribal property rights and constitutional protections, the group also sought action against illegal immigrants, fraudulent ILPs, and irregularities in the permission process. India Today also reports the same.
Therefore, it confirms that residents are protesting, demanding strict measures against illegal immigrants and the digitalisation of ILP.
