  • Fact Check: This car did NOT plough through rioters in France, it is from an old illegal street race The car drove into a crowd in Bordeaux on April 14 during an unauthorised street race. The driver and three passengers on board were arrested following the incident. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows an unauthorised car race in Bordeaux, France, in April. It predates the ongoing riots. A shocking video of a speeding car running over people on a sidewalk was widely shared as alleged retaliation against the ongoing violent protests across France. Per those sharing the video, that car’s driver deliberately rammed into “Muslim” rioters in France to punish them. On Twitter, one person wrote, “Driver decided to take the matter to his own hands and punish the rioters in France.” India Today found that this video is from an unauthorised car race held in France’s Bordeaux back in April, almost two months before the riots began. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to a Facebook post from TF1 INFO, a France-based media outlet. Sharing the video in question on April 17, the post mentioned that at least six people were injured in Bordeaux during a street race. It also contained another video of the incident shot from a different angle, along with interviews with the victims. This proved that the video predated the ongoing riots, which began after Frech police killed a 17-year-old in a Paris suburb on June 27. As per a report from Russian state-owned news agency Sputnik, a car drove into a crowd of spectators on Rue du Professor Darget in Bordeaux on April 14. The driver and three passengers on board were reportedly arrested following the incident. This incident reportedly took place during an unauthorised car race, during which, a man and a woman were critically injured, while four others suffered minor injuries. According to Russian state-owned news network RT, the driver, a 32-year-old local Frenchman, reportedly lost control of his vehicle while taking a turn at a high speed. Following the incident, he reportedly fled the scene. Witnesses, however, blocked him in the town of Bassens. He was then arrested along with the three passengers who were present in the car during the incident. Thus, it is more than clear that this video has no links to the ongoing riots in France.
