  • Fact Check: Scary video of nosediving aircraft with burning engine is not from Nepal, it's from Russia The video in question is from Russia's Moscow and is not related to the recent plane crash in Nepal. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is an old video from Russia’s Moscow. As per news reports, it shows the crash of a Russian military transport plane near the Kubinka airfield in 2021. Search operations are still underway for the missing passengers of the Yeti Airlines ATR 72 aircraft that crashed in Pokhara, Nepal on January 15. While at least 68 people have been declared dead, details on why the crash happened haven’t been revealed to the public yet. However, social media has already seen a deluge of misinformation surrounding the incident. One such is the video of an aircraft that crashed after one of its engines caught fire. Those sharing it claimed that the video showed the final moments of the ill-fated Yeti Airlines flight. AFWA in its investigation, however, found that the video is old and from Russia. And therefore, not related to the recent Nepal plane crash. AFWA PROBE We noticed that the voiceover in the video was in Russian. A reverse search of the video’s keyframes led us to multiple media reports from August 2021 that contained the same video. As per these reports, the video showed the prototype of a Russian military transport plane, Il-112V, that crashed before landing near Kubinka airfield in Russia’s Moscow on August 17, 2021. Fire in the plane's right engine is considered to be the principal cause of the incident. Two test pilots and a flight engineer aboard the plane reportedly died in the accident. The same video was shared on the same date by multiple people on social media. We were also able to geolocate the video and confirm it was shot near the Kubinka airfield in the Moscow Oblast region of Russia. Around 26 seconds into the viral video, we noticed a church with green tombs. And at the mark of 36 seconds, we noticed the flight crossing two red- and white-coloured towers (likely telecom towers). With the help of Google Earth, we were also able to locate the church and the two towers near Kubinka airfield. It is hence clear that the video in question is from Russia’s Moscow and not related to the recent plane crash in Nepal.
