Fact Check
What is a body’s biological clock?
According to an article published in 2020, Our body has internal clocks called circadian clocks that control our daily activities like sleeping and eating. These clocks also respond to signals from our environment, such as light and food. When our clocks are not in sync with our environment, it can harm our health. Eating at times when our body expects us to sleep can disrupt our metabolism. However, having a consistent eating and fasting schedule can help keep our clocks healthy and improve our metabolism. This science is giving us new ideas about the best times to eat for our health.
How the timings of the food affects metabolism?
A study was conducted in 2020 that looked at the timing of food that affects energy metabolism in people with obesity. Participants were divided into two groups, one eating more calories in the morning and less in the evening, and the other doing the opposite. The study found that people who ate more in the morning felt less hungry and had less desire to eat in the evening. The authors suggest that this may be due to the body’s internal clock, and that eating more in the morning could help with weight management.
What is the best time to eat fruits?
Dietician Priyanka says, “In my opinion it’s different for everyone. There is no one size fit for all. It depends on the nature of your body, health condition and food sensitivity. As a thumb rule you should avoid heavy meals like non-veg food items, paneer, fried food etc., after 7 PM as they are difficult to digest.”
Can eating fruits in the morning on an empty stomach help boost metabolism?
There is not enough evidence regarding it but eating fruits on an empty stomach may not be good for everyone, according to some medical experts. When you eat fruit, it can cause your blood sugar levels to rise quickly. This can be especially harmful for people with diabetes or those at risk for it. Consuming fruits on an empty stomach can also elevate the likelihood of uric acid buildup in the body, which may result in painful joints. Fruits are healthy because they contain fibre and polyphenols, but they also have high amounts of sugars like fructose, glucose, and sucrose. Some fruits, like bananas, mangoes, persimmons, pear, grapes, apples, and pineapples, have particularly high sugar content.
Dt Priyanka says “If you want to increase your metabolism you should take protein rich food like sprouts, besan chilla, eggs etc., as the first meal of the day. Fruits do not have much impact on metabolism. Fruits are rich in antioxidants that help to neutralise free radicals produced by our body. So, it can be taken any time of the day, especially as a mid-meal snack.”
