  • Fact Check: 2018 video from Austria goes viral as cloudburst in Sikkim India Today found that this video is neither recent nor does it have anything to do with the recent cloudburst in Sikkim. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video was captured near Lake Millstatt in Austria in 2018. A startling video purportedly showing a cloudburst in Sikkim has gone viral on social media. It shows what appears to be a thick column of rain rapidly moving from the mountains towards a water body. The sound of thunder can also be heard in the video. At least 14 people were killed when a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim resulted in flash floods in the Teesta River on October 4. A Facebook user shared the video and wrote,“Cloud bursts. At North Sikkim chunthang”. The archived version of two such posts can be seen here and here. India Today found that this video is neither recent nor does it have anything to do with Sikkim. It shows a microburst over Lake Millstatt in Austria in 2018. OUR PROBE In the comments under one post containing the viral video, we noticed several claimed that it was old. We then took our search further and reverse-searched its keyframes. This led us to a 2020 YouTube video titled “Microburst at Lake Millstatt in Austria”. The video’s description read: “It is situated at 588 metres above the Adriatic (1,929 ft), north of the Drava Valley within the Gurktal Alps (Nock Mountains) range of the Central Eastern Alps, near the town of Spittal an der Drau. With a surface area of 13.3 km2 (5.1 sq mi) Lake Millstatt is the second largest lake of Carinthia (after Lake W¶rth), though with a depth of 142 m (466 ft) the most voluminous by far.” Subsequent searches led us to a longer version of the video shared on the YouTube channel of a person called Peter Maier on June 12, 2018. In the description of this video, Maier said that this timelapse video captured a microburst over Lake Millstatt in Austria. An Insider report from June 2018 stated that mountaineer Peter Maier captured the video in question from his hotel terrace near Lake Millstatt, Austria. In 2018, when this video went viral, many questioned its authenticity. Maier quickly put an end to the speculations, writing on Facebook: "Here are a few original recordings with original sound clips, for all those who still believe that it is fake." DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLOUDBURST & MICROBURST According to the Indian Meteorological Department, a cloudburst is an extreme weather event characterised by the occurrence of a large amount of rainfall over a small area within a short span of time. A microburst, on the other hand, is a small column of exceptionally intense and localised sinking air that results in a violent outrush of air at the ground, according to the US-based meteorological news network AccuWeather. To sum up, an old video from Austria is being falsely shared as a recent cloudburst in Sikkim. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
