  • Last Updated on June 6, 2024 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A viral video on social media suggests popping a pimple for beautiful skin. We did the fact check to term it as false. The Claim We came across a Facebook post which has gone viral claiming that you should pop your pimples and squeeze them out for beautiful skin. The video keeps pushing out pus from the pimple which eventually leads to bleeding. Fact Check What is a Pimple? A pimple, scientifically known as a papule or pustule, is a common skin issue, especially during puberty. It occurs when the skin’s tiny pores, where hair grows, become blocked with a mix of oil and dead skin cells. This blockage creates a breeding ground for bacteria, like Propionibacterium acnes, which leads to inflammation, causing the redness and swelling we see with pimples. They can appear as small bumps with a white or black top or deeper under the skin. Pimples often pop up on the face, neck, chest, and back. They are usually not a big deal health-wise, but they can be bothersome and affect self-esteem. What are the main causes of pimples? Pimples can occur due to various factors, including hormonal changes, excess oil production and many more. These factors can individually or collectively contribute to pimples. The factors causing include: - Hormonal changes: Especially during puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy. - Excess oil production: Sebaceous glands produce too much oil. - Clogged pores: Due to dead skin cells and oil. - Bacteria: Propionibacterium acnes can lead to inflammation. - Diet and stress: Certain foods and stress levels can exacerbate pimples. - Genetics: Family history plays a role. Is it correct to pop a pimple and squeeze them out? No, you should not pop a pimple. Popping a pimple might seem like a quick solution, but it can lead to several negative outcomes. When you squeeze a pimple, you risk pushing the bacteria and pus deeper into the skin. This can lead to further inflammation and potentially more pimples in the surrounding area. To add more, squeezing a pimple can cause trauma to the skin, resulting in redness, swelling, and even bleeding. This trauma can also lead to the formation of scars. And, scars are difficult to treat and may last long after the pimple has healed. Furthermore, popping pimples disrupts the skin’s natural healing process. When left alone, pimples will usually heal on their own over time as the body’s immune system works to eliminate the infection and repair the damaged tissue. However, popping a pimple can interfere with this process, prolonging the healing time and potentially leading to more severe complications. Instead, focus on gentle skin care practices and use targeted treatments to help reduce inflammation and prevent future breakouts. If you’re struggling with persistent or severe acne, it’s always best to consult with a dermatologist for personalised advice and treatment options. What does a dermatologist say? Dermatologists strongly advise against popping pimples. According to experts, it’s best to leave the pimple alone and let it heal naturally. They recommend using proper acne treatments and consulting a dermatologist if acne becomes severe. We checked with Dr Sachin Gupta, Dermatologist, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, for his take on popping pimples. He says, “Popping a pimple may seem satisfying, but it can introduce bacteria deeper into your skin, sparking a cycle of inflammation and further breakouts. This manipulation can also damage the skin’s healing process, often resulting in scars that can remain visible for years.” Dr Gupta further informs us about the best practices for acne care, “To prevent the formation of acne scars, adopt a gentle skincare approach: - Let Pimples Heal Naturally: Avoid touching or picking at your face. - Use Appropriate Skincare Products: Incorporate products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to manage acne effectively. - Consult a Dermatologist: For persistent acne issues, seek professional advice to receive treatments tailored to your skin type.” Conclusion Popping a pimple is not a correct practice for achieving beautiful skin, and hence the claim is false. It can lead to infections, scarring, and worsen the overall condition of your skin. Proper skin care routines and professional treatments are the best approaches to maintaining clear and healthy skin. Always consult a dermatologist for persistent or severe acne issues.
