No, eating raw green chillies won’t clear blemishes. Blemishes, especially acne, are caused by factors like hormones, bacteria, clogged pores, and inflammation. Green chillies do contain Vitamin C, which supports skin health, but they don’t directly help with blemishes. Vitamin C works best when applied topically, not just through diet. While green chillies have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, their effect on blemishes is minimal. For clearer skin, dermatologists recommend proven treatments like salicylic acid, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or prescription options. We spoke with Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant in Lucknow, for his expert insights on using green chillies for spot-free skin. He says, “Green chillies do contain Vitamin C, which is beneficial for your skin, but they aren’t a quick fix for blemishes. Acne and other skin blemishes are usually caused by factors like hormonal changes, bacteria, blocked pores, and inflammation. While chillies have antioxidants that can support overall skin health, they won’t directly clear up blemishes. To achieve clear skin, it’s important to follow a good skincare routine, eat a balanced diet, and address the root causes of acne.” We also reached out to Dr Rashi Soni, a Dermatologist from Rashi Hospital, Hingoli, Maharashtra, to learn about effective ways to fight acne and pigmentation. She says, “To tackle acne, pigmentation, and blemishes, stick to a simple routine. Cleanse gently, use acne treatments like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and moisturise based on your skin type. For pigmentation, try products with Vitamin C or niacinamide. And, of course, always wear sunscreen – it helps prevent further damage. A healthy diet, plenty of water, and managing stress will also make a difference. It takes time, but with the right care, your skin will improve.” Similarly, there are claims that morning saliva can cure acne and offer spotless skin. However, this lacks strong scientific evidence. Can eating green chillies brighten the skin? Maybe, but not as quickly or dramatically as claimed. Green chillies contain Vitamin C, which supports collagen production and protects against skin damage from UV rays and pollution. This can help maintain skin firmness and prevent dark spots, but the effect isn’t instant. While eating green chillies provides some Vitamin C, they aren’t a quick fix for glowing skin. A more effective approach includes a good skincare routine with Vitamin C serums, exfoliation, hydration, and sun protection. Topical Vitamin C works better for targeting pigmentation directly. However, avoid applying green chillies to the skin, as they can cause irritation and a burning sensation. Are there any risks to consuming raw green chillies for skin benefits? Yes, eating too many raw green chillies can be harmful. As we have discussed, green chillies contain capsaicin, which gives them their heat. While capsaicin has anti-inflammatory benefits when applied topically, consuming it in excess can irritate the stomach, causing heartburn, acid reflux, cramps, or even ulcers, particularly for those with digestive issues. If you’re eating green chillies for skin benefits, moderation is key. People with conditions like IBS or gastritis should be especially cautious with spicy foods. Moreover, there are concerns about the potential risks of consuming large amounts of chili peppers. While the connection between chili peppers and cancer is still unclear, some studies suggest that capsaicin might influence cancer risk. High chili consumption has been linked to a higher risk of stomach, gallbladder, and mouth cancer, particularly in India. However, these studies don’t prove that chilies directly cause cancer, only that heavy consumption is associated with a higher risk. Can other foods or ingredients provide better skin benefits? Yes, many other foods are better for skin health than green chillies. A diet rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamins can improve skin clarity and brightness. Berries, leafy greens, tomatoes, nuts, seeds, and oily fish like salmon provide essential nutrients like vitamins A, E, and omega-3s, which protect and nourish the skin. However, some social media claims go a step further, suggesting that diet alone can tighten loose skin, which is incorrect. Staying hydrated is just as important. Drinking enough water keeps the skin moisturised, reducing dryness, irritation, and blemishes.
