Fact Check
The man seen in the image is the Japanese ambassador to Ukraine, who is holding his great-grandfather’s samurai sword which was delivered to him for Tokyo. He is ready to take on Russian forces.
On conducting a reverse image search, Newschecker found an article published on ‘The Week’, which identified the man seen in the viral image as Ukraine’s ambassador to Japan Sergiy Korsunsky.
According to the report, Ambassador Korsunsky tweeted this picture on Feb 15, 2022, in reference to the brewing tension between Russia and Ukraine. Korsunsky captioned the picture as “We know what we are fighting for. How about Russia?”
Issuing a clarification on the fake news, Korsunsky told American media house Fox News, “We know about this fake (news), but we lost patience explaining who is who”. As per Korsunsky, the armour seen in the picture was provided to him by samurai artist Tetsuro Shimaguchi.
