Fact Check
The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation reveals that the circulated video is not the scene of the recently recovered body of the Hindu youth Ovi. In reality, the scene of the recovery of the sack-packed body of a youth named Joni Sarker from a drain in Narayanganj in June of last year has been circulated with the discussed claim. Furthermore, Ovi was not a student of Jagannath University; rather, he was a fourth-year Honors student in the Management Department of Naogaon Government College.
Through investigation, a video circulated on June 17 last year from a Facebook account named ‘Jabed Ahmed Jabed Ahmed’ was found. The body and the people beside the body in that video bear a resemblance in attire and appearance to the body and the people beside it in the discussed video.
According to the claim in the caption of Jabed Ahmed’s post, this is the scene of the recovery of a sack-filled body from a roadside drain in an area known as Notun Rasta in front of Lal Kha Advance Garments in East Shiachar, Fatullah, on June 17.
Based on this lead, a report published on the website of the national daily Jaijaidin titled “Sack-packed body of youth recovered from drain in Fatullah” was found through a search.
The report reveals that on June 17 at 11:30 AM, police recovered the sack-packed body of a youth named Joni Sarker (25) from a roadside drain in the Lal Kha area of East Shiachar, Fatullah. The deceased Joni Sarker was the son of Karuna Sarker of Bishnupur village under Jamalganj Police Station in Sylhet district. He used to live with his family in the Lal Kha area of Fatullah.
Fatullah Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Anwar Hossain told the media that Joni Sarker’s body was recovered from the drain with hands and legs tied inside a plastic sack.
Subsequently, the police’s statement regarding the discussed incident was found in another report published on the Prothom Alo website on June 19 titled “Fed up with torture, parents kill drug-addicted son: Police”.
On June 19, Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Circle A) Md. Hasinuzzaman stated that during the investigation, the police found the involvement of the father, Karuna Sarker, in the son’s murder. Later, collecting CCTV camera footage confirmed the father’s involvement. In the initial interrogation, he stated that the son was a drug addict. He often vandalized the house for money. He also beat his parents. Fed up with the son’s torture over a long period, the father killed him by striking him on the head with a rolling pin (used for making roti) while he was sleeping. The mother, Asita Rani Sarker, assisted her husband.
Additionally, the same information was circulated from the Narayanganj District Police’s Facebook page.
That is, the sack-packed body in the circulated video is of a youth named Joni Sarker.
On the other hand, investigating the youth attached to the post circulated with the discussed claim, areport published on the website of the mainstream media outlet Somoy TV on January 18 was found. An attachment of the discussed youth’s photo was found in the report. The report states that the lifeless body of college student Ovi was recovered from the river adjacent to the Kalitola Crematorium in Naogaon town, 6 days after he went missing. On Saturday (January 17) afternoon, police recovered the body of an unidentified youth floating in the river. Later, when the news spread on social media, Ovi’s family came and identified the body. The deceased Ovi was the eldest son of Romesh Chandra, a resident of Santahar in Adamdighi Upazila of Bogra. He was a fourth-year Honors student in the Management Department of Naogaon Government College.
Searching with relevant keywords, no evidence was found from reliable sources to support the claim that Ovi was tied up and killed. Moreover, from a letter written by Ovi’s father to the OC of Naogaon Sadar Model Police Station regarding this matter, it is known that the deceased’s father wrote, “I believe my son committed suicide by jumping into the water out of grievance against us. I do not have any complaints against any of my relatives regarding my son’s death. I or my family members will not file any kind of lawsuit against anyone in this regard.”
It is worth noting that when the discussed video was previously circulated with a different fake claim, the Rumor Scanner team published a fact-check report on the matter at that time.
Therefore, an old video of a different incident has been circulated claiming it to be the scene of the recently recovered body of Hindu youth Ovi; which is misleading.
