  • Last Updated on July 11, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A number of social media users have shared a post that says, “Black Fungus Spreading due to Farm Chickens.” We have done a Fact Check and found the claim to be False. The Claim A screenshot of NDTV news report is being circulated on social media by multiple users that reads, “Black Fungus Spreading due to Farm Chickens.” The post further asks viewers not to eat farm chicken for few days. The archived version of the posts can be seen here, here, here and here. Fact Check Are Chickens causing the spread of Black Fungus? NO. Press Information Bureau Fact Check Team (PIB Fact Check) has already debunked this myth. Also, as confirmed by Dr. Randeep Gularia, Director AIIMS, Mucormycosis (Black Fungus) infection is not a communicable disease i.e. it cannot spread from contact between humans or animals. Hence, there is very little chance of Black Fungus transmitting from chickens to humans. In a post it was mentioned that chickens are less susceptible to Mucormycosis but in exceptional cases the virus can spread to gastrointestinal tract, skin and other organs. As per the website of US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, ‘People get mucormycosis by coming in contact with the fungal spores in the environment… These forms of mucormycosis usually occur in people who have health problems or take medicines that lower the body’s ability to fight germs and sickness.” Hence, the immunity and hygiene conditions of a person are believed to be the main reasons for mucormycosis and not farm chickens. One of the baseless claims showed link between cow urine and black fungus. There was a fake news report from BBC website stating that Indian scientist find link with cow urine Did NDTV publish the report mentioned in the photo? The story published by NDTV on May 08, 2021 was originally a story circulated by PTI. The story link is here and a snapshot is given below. This story is about Bird Flu spreading in some parts of Punjab. This has no mention about Black Fungus or Mucormycosis.
