Quick Take
An article claims that Sambar can prevent colon cancer. Our fact check found no strong evidence to support this claim, so we rate it as Mostly False.
The Claim
A Herzindagi article suggests that consuming Sambar, a popular South Indian dish, can prevent colon cancer due to its ingredients like turmeric and drumsticks. The article cites various experts and studies to support this claim. A similar claim was published in Deccan Chronicle as well.
Fact Check
Does Sambar have health benefits?
Yes, Sambar has health benefits, but not as a cure or prevention for cancer. Sambar is a traditional South Indian dish made from lentils, vegetables, and spices like turmeric, which are known for their nutritional value. Lentils are rich in protein and fibre, which support digestion and overall health. Vegetables in Sambar add vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to the diet. Even though these components contribute to a balanced diet, they do not specifically prevent or cure colon cancer.
Can Sambar cure cancer?
No, Sambar cannot cure cancer. There is no scientific evidence that consuming Sambar, or any specific dish, can cure cancer. Cancer treatment requires medical interventions such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or targeted therapy. A healthy diet, including dishes like Sambar, can support overall well-being. However, it is not a substitute for professional medical treatment. Much like the claim that alkaline water can prevent cancer, the idea that Sambar alone could cure or prevent such a serious illness is misleading.
Can Sambar prevent colon cancer?
No, it can’t. Sambar, with its blend of lentils, vegetables, and spices, is undeniably healthy and a staple in many diets. However, claiming that it can prevent colon cancer is an overstatement. The spices in Sambar, like turmeric, do contain compounds like curcumin that have been studied for their potential benefits. But, the research is still in early stages, and the quantities you would consume in a serving of Sambar are too small to have a significant impact (poor bioavailability). Colon cancer prevention is more complex, involving a mix of regular screenings, a balanced diet rich in fibre, and other healthy lifestyle habits. Just like the claim that fasting can cure cancer, the idea that Sambar alone could prevent such a serious condition oversimplifies the issue. While Sambar is a wonderful addition to your diet, it shouldn’t be viewed as a protective measure against cancer.
During our investigation, we found the following study:
A 2016 study suggests that Sambar might offer some protection against colon cancer in a preclinical setting. Researchers found that Sambar reduced certain cancer markers in rats exposed to a chemical that induces colon cancer. However, this was an animal study, not human. We need more research to confirm if these results apply to people. While the findings are interesting, they don’t prove that Sambar can prevent colon cancer in humans.
Dr Pooja Khullar, a Radiation Oncologist, from Dharamshila Narayana Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, gave us valuable insights about whether Sambar can prevent colon cancer or not. Talking to us, she says, “The idea of a dish like Sambar preventing colon cancer is appealing. But, it’s important to understand that there’s no concrete scientific evidence backing this claim. Turmeric, a key ingredient in Sambar, has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, does show some promise in laboratory settings. However, the amount of curcumin you’d get from a serving of Sambar is minimal, and its low bioavailability means your body absorbs very little of it. Cancer prevention is a complex process that involves regular screenings, a balanced diet, and healthy lifestyle choices. Simply eating a particular dish, no matter how healthy, isn’t enough to prevent a disease as complex as cancer.”
We also interviewed Dr Sharad Malhotra, a Senior Consultant & HOD Gastroenterology Hepatology & Therapeutic Endoscopy, at Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi, for his expertise on the topic. He informs us, “Sambar is a nutritious and wholesome dish that many enjoy as part of a balanced diet, but it shouldn’t be seen as a shield against colon cancer. The spices and ingredients in Sambar, such as turmeric, drumsticks, and fenugreek, are certainly beneficial for health in general, contributing to good digestion and providing essential nutrients. However, the claim that Sambar can specifically prevent colon cancer oversimplifies the issue. Colon cancer risk is influenced by a combination of factors, including diet, genetics, and lifestyle. While a diet high in fibre, fruits, and vegetables can help lower your risk, it’s important to complement this with regular medical check-ups and screenings, especially if you have a family history of the disease.”
What is curcumin and what are its health effects?
Curcumin is a compound found in turmeric, one of the spices used in Sambar. Curcumin has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some research suggests that curcumin may have a role in preventing certain diseases, including cancer. However, the effectiveness of curcumin in cancer prevention is still being studied, and it is not a proven treatment. The bioavailability of curcumin, meaning how well the body can absorb and use it, is also low, especially when consumed in small amounts as part of a dish like Sambar.
Can curcumin in Sambar prevent cancer?
No, not really. Curcumin has shown potential in laboratory studies for cancer prevention, there is no strong evidence to suggest that the curcumin in Sambar can prevent cancer, including colon cancer. The amount of curcumin in a typical serving of Sambar is likely too small to have a significant impact. Moreover, curcumin’s low bioavailability means that even less of it reaches the bloodstream, reducing its potential effectiveness. Therefore, relying on Sambar or any other food containing curcumin for cancer prevention is not advisable.
THIP Media Take
The claim that Sambar can prevent colon cancer is Mostly False. Sambar is a healthy dish that can be part of a balanced diet. However, it should not serve as a preventive measure or treatment for colon cancer. The benefits of curcumin in cancer prevention are not conclusive, and Sambar alone is unlikely to provide any significant protective effects against cancer. It is essential to rely on proven medical treatments and maintain a healthy lifestyle to reduce cancer risk.
