  • Fact Check: This brutal video of a woman being tortured by armed mob is NOT from Manipur India Today found that this shocking video is old and has nothing to do with the ongoing Manipur violence. It's from Myanmar. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from Tamu in Myanmar and allegedly shows a woman being publicly executed by the armed wing of Myanmar’s government in exile in June 2022. Amid continuing violent clashes in Manipur, a video (Trigger warning: graphic violence) of a mob assaulting a woman on a road has been widely shared on social media. Some men in the video wore camouflage outfits and carried automatic weapons. The men assaulting the woman later blindfolded her. Those sharing this video claimed it was from Manipur. "Manipur has slipped out of Modi and Shah’s control. Videos have emerged of armed civilians torturing a young Kuki Christian girl and eventually shooting her to death. Manipur is burning and Modi is silent," claimed a Facebook post containing the video. The archived version of a similar post can be seen here. India Today’s investigation that the video is a year old and from Myanmar, unrelated to the ongoing Manipur crisis. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to a website that featured a screengrab of what appeared to be a video of the same incident taken from a different angle. Per the website, it was a public execution of a woman in Myanmar. No other details, including when the incident had taken place. However, in the page’s source code, we found that the video was uploaded to the site on December 9, 2022. We used this clue to look for relevant news reports and found several from December 2022 that contained screenshots from the viral video. A report in “elevenmyanmar.com” published on December 3, 2022, noted that the incident was from Myanmar's Tamu town. Tamu is more than a hundred kilometres away from Imphal, Manipur’s capital. According to the report, the woman was beaten by the members of the Fourth Battalion of People Defense Forces, the armed wing of the National Unity Government of Myanmar, the government in exile formed by a group of elected lawmakers and members of parliament ousted in the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état. Another report by Myanmar Now, published on December 6, 2022, quoted Naing Htoo Aung, the secretary of the NUG's defence ministry, who said that a detailed probe had been launched into the brutal killing of the woman. The report further mentioned that the 25-year-old victim's name was Aye Mar Tun, and the incident happened in the town of Tamu in June 2022. Thus, it is more than clear that a year-old unrelated video from Myanmar was falsely shared online as a recent killing in Manipur.
