Can fenugreek seeds really help in weight loss?
Not really. While fenugreek leaves and seeds may offer some benefits for weight loss, they are not the miracle solution claimed. The high fibre content in fenugreek can help increase feelings of fullness, which may lead to a reduction in calorie consumption. A 2015 study suggested that fenugreek, along with fennel tea, might suppress appetite in overweight women, but the study involved only nine participants—too small to draw reliable conclusions. Additionally, there is no strong evidence that fenugreek causes significant weight loss. Weight loss is a complex process that requires more than adding one food to your diet. A balanced diet, daily exercise, and a healthy lifestyle are essential.
We reached out to Shruti K Bhardwaj, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad, for her expert insights on fenugreek seeds for weight loss. She states, “Fenugreek seeds are a promising natural ingredient with potential benefits for weight loss. Some studies suggest they may help control appetite and reduce calorie intake. However, we still need more research to confirm this. Remember, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and a balanced lifestyle are essential for sustainable weight loss. Can fenugreek seeds really clear your skin?
Not really. Fenugreek seeds contain vitamin C, which is important for skin health. But while vitamin C can help maintain healthy skin, there is no substantial evidence to support the idea that fenugreek can specifically clear up acne or give you glowing skin. Clear skin requires a combination of healthy eating, proper skincare, and good hygiene—not just relying on fenugreek.
Does fenugreek water improve sleep?
Not really. Fenugreek contains compounds like flavonoids and some people use fenugreek water for its potential to ease discomfort from indigestion. This may indirectly improve sleep. However, there are no studies linking fenugreek directly to better sleep. Herbal remedies like chamomile are much more effective for promoting restful sleep.
Can fenugreek help with digestion?
Maybe. Fenugreek is rich in soluble fibre, which can help with digestion and relieve constipation by adding bulk to stools. Some animal studies show that fenugreek may have positive effects on gut health, but it’s not a miracle cure for all digestive issues. A varied diet, plenty of water, and exercise are essential for good digestion.
Similarly, people also claim that soaked fenugreek seeds can cure piles, but this is completely false.
Does fenugreek relieve menstrual cramps?
Not really. Fenugreek has traditionally been used to relieve menstrual cramps, possibly due to its anti-inflammatory properties. However, there is very limited evidence to prove it works, and its safety isn’t well studied. While it might provide some relief, we need more research to confirm its effectiveness compared to other remedies.
Can fenugreek treat constipation?
It may help. The high fibre content of fenugreek can help manage constipation by promoting regular bowel movements. However, it’s important to drink plenty of water when using fenugreek to avoid bloating or discomfort. Like with any remedy, moderation is key.
Generally, fenugreek is safe when used in small amounts, like in cooking. Large amounts can cause nausea, diarrhoea, low blood sugar, and rare liver problems. It is not safe for children or pregnant women and may cause allergies.
Does fenugreek prevent hair fall?
Not quite. Fenugreek seeds contain protein and niacin (vitamin B3), which are beneficial for hair health, but there is no solid scientific evidence to confirm that they can stop hair fall or promote significant hair growth. Some believe that sprouted fenugreek seeds can promote hair regrowth, but this claim also lacks strong scientific backing. While the anti-inflammatory properties of fenugreek might help improve scalp health, tackling hair loss requires a holistic approach, which includes a nutritional diet for hair and proper hair care.
We connected with Dr Sachin Gupta, Dermatologist from Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, for his opinion on fenugreek for hair fall. He explains, “While fenugreek is commonly used in traditional hair care routines, its impact on promoting hair growth and strengthening hair is not strongly supported by scientific evidence. It might provide some scalp and hair nourishment, but it’s unlikely to deliver significant results on its own. To maintain healthy hair, focusing on overall nutrition, stress management, and choosing the right hair care products is essential.”
