  • Fact Check: 2015 pro-refugee rally from Belgium used to further divisive narrative about France riots India Today found that while the second image shows the recent riots in France, the first image is from a 2015 rally in Belgium. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This rally took place in Belgium in 2015, not in France. More than 3,000 people have reportedly been detained across France since violent protests began following the police shooting of a 17-year-old on June 27. Now, in an attempt to blame the nationwide violent protests on refugees, many shared two photos, the first showing a group of people marching with a banner that says, “They are not dangerous, they are in danger! Refugees welcome”, and the second showing silhouettes of people around a huge fire. Both photos were allegedly from France, the first shot in 2016 and the second in 2023. The archived version of one such claim can be seen here. India Today found that while the second image shows the recent riots in France, the first image is from a 2015 rally in Belgium. Our Probe Using reverse search, we found that the viral image (and other photos) of people marching with the banner was shared by multiple social media users in September 2015. Per the posts, these were from a rally in Belgium, held on September 27, 2015. Subsequently, we found a September 2015 report by VRT News, a national public-service broadcaster in Belgium. Per the report, between 15,000 and 20,000 people joined a march to support refugees coming into Belgium. The march took place in Brussels and participants demanded better conditions for refugees and urged politicians to take measures against racism and xenophobia. Anadolu Agency, a Turkish state-run news outlet also reported that one of the social groups supporting this rally was BELLRefugees. We found BELLRefugees on Twitter and saw that the group shared multiple images and videos from that rally on September 27, 2015. These looked similar to the viral photo. According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, France welcomes around 3,000 refugees each year. To sum it up, an image of a rally which was organised in Belgium in 2015 is being shared to further the narrative of blaming refugees for the recent violence in France.
