  • Fact Check: Mysterious fireball landed before Turkey quakes? Nope, it's just an asteroid spotted over Europe A video shows a mysterious fireball fell just before the earthquake in Hatay, Turkey. It was found an asteroid that lit up the skies over Western Europe on February 13. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows an asteroid that lit up the skies over Western Europe on February 13. Did a mysterious object that fell from the sky cause the devastating February earthquakes in Turkey? This is a conspiracy theory that’s now being discussed on social media, alongside a video of an illuminated object falling from the sky. Allegedly, this video was recorded in the Hatay province of Turkey. One Twitter user shared the viral video and wrote, “The mysterious fireball that fell just before the earthquake in Turkey”. The archived version of this tweet can be seen here. Some also claimed that this video had something to do with the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), a former US Military program. They claimed that the earthquake in Turkey was caused by HAARP. AFWA found that this video shows an asteroid that was spotted in the skies over Western Europe on February 13. AFWA Probe Upon reverse searching keyframes from the viral video, we found that it was shared on the YouTube channel of USA Today on February 14. As per the description given there, it showed an asteroid that was spotted across the skies over Europe. Who shot this video? We noticed that USA Today has credited this video to a person with the username “@tymlaly76700”. We also found that many others on social media had also attributed the video to the same person on Twitter. We looked into the Twitter account of @tymlaly76700 and found that it belongs to a person called Kevin who claims to live in Le Havre, France. Kevin shared this video on Twitter on February 13. Replying to a question, he said that he shot the video “by chance” while trying to show a shooting star to children. What is HAARP? High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is a former US military program that used high-power, high-frequency transmitters to study the properties of the ionosphere. The Ionosphere is the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and the vacuum of space. In 2015, HAARP’s operation was transferred from the US Air Force to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. According to the official website of HAARP, it cannot control or manipulate the weather. We also found a roundup report for journalists published on the British website Science Media Center. In this report, multiple experts denied the possibility of the Turkey-Syria earthquakes being caused by HAARP. To sum it up, a totally unrelated video is being falsely shared as a mysterious fireball that fell on the Earth just before the devastating quakes in Turkey.
