  • Fact Check: Viral Video Of General Upendra Dwivedi Claiming That He Criticised The Government Over Taliban Support Is A Deepfake The video of Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi criticising the Indian government's policies regarding the Taliban government in Afghanistan is a deepfake. General Dwivedi has not made any such statement. In an event at the NDA, General Dwivedi stated that the Indian Army is fully prepared for "Operation Sindoor 2.0" if necessary. A video from this very program has been manipulated using AI to make a false claim. By: Abhishek Parashar - Published: Jun 3, 2026 at 03:49 PM - New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video of Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi is going viral on social media, in which he can allegedly be heard criticising the Indian government over Taliban Support. It is being claimed that he criticised the central government, saying that due to the government’s failed policies, India is doing nothing more than sending money to the Taliban government. Vishvas News investigated and found that this video of General Dwivedi is a deepfake. In the original video, General Dwivedi stated that Operation Sindoor is still ongoing and that the Indian Army is prepared for Operation Sindoor 2.0 if needed. Furthermore, the account from which this video was shared has previously shared AI-manipulated videos of top Indian Army officials. What is viral? Social media user ‘XaQil’ shared the viral video (archive link) on May 31, 2026, with the caption, “Due to failed policies of the Central Government, India is doing nothing except sending Money to the Taliban government. How can money alone do everything?” Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi. Investigation In the viral video, General Dwivedi can allegedly be heard saying, “While we are pushing Operation Sindoor, Pakistan is doing Operation Tandoor in Afghanistan. Due to the failed policies of the Central Government, India is doing nothing except sending money to the Taliban Government. How can money alone do everything? Central Government will have to withdraw this policy and give proper ideological direction and training to the Afghan Taliban, and they can become the biggest assets of India. Afghan Taliban can not only fight Pakistan but can wreak havoc in Iran. This will make India gain diplomatic superiority in front of the United States and Israel.” To verify the viral claim, we conducted a reverse image search of key frames from the viral video. This led us to the official X handle of news agency ANI, where the video was posted on May 30, 2026. Responding to a question in the video, General Dwivedi says, “As far as Operation Sindoor is concerned, it is still ongoing. The fighting has stopped for some time. If Operation Sindoor 2.0 happens, the Indian Army and the three services are preparing well for it. Right now, we are focusing on increasing cooperation and coordination between the three services and preparing ourselves for the next battle… 24×7, the battlefield is so open that every move is known to the other side, so we have to be very careful in our deployment, work, and security measures necessary to protect our soldiers as well as the general public in the border areas.” This statement of General Dwivedi is also mentioned in other news reports. According to a Navbharat Times report, “The National Defence Academy (NDA) held a passing-out parade for its 150th batch of cadets, with Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi as the chief guest. During the parade, Upendra Dwivedi stated that the armed forces are fully prepared for ‘Operation Sindoor 2.0’ if required.” Nowhere in the video clip can he be heard commenting on the central government’s policies regarding the Taliban, raising suspicions that the video may be manipulated. To check the possibility of AI manipulation in the video, we run it through various deepfake detection tools. Out of 11 detectors of ‘Deepfake-O-Meter’ of ‘UB Media Forensic Lab’, 8 confirmed the highest probability of AI manipulation in this multimedia. ‘AVSRDD’ (2025) detector confirmed 100% probability of AI manipulation, ‘TALL’ detector 99.8%, ‘LIPINC’ detector 99.7%, ‘XCLIP’ 99.7%, ‘DSP-FWA’ detector 98.9%, ‘SBI’ 91% and ‘WAV2LIP-STA’ 70.2%. InVid’s Meower Deepfake Video Detector also confirmed the possibility of AI manipulation in this video. The Meower Deepfake Video Detector identifies whether the person’s face in the video has been altered. For further verification, we also tested the audio in this video using a deepfake detector. Our investigation clearly indicates that the viral video is AI-manipulated. Audio analysis by four detectors from UB Media Forensic Lab’s Deepfake-O-Meter confirms the possibility of AI manipulation in the audio. The ‘RawNet2-Vocoder’ audio detector scored 100%, ‘RawNet3’ 85.6%, ‘RawNet2’ 78.9%, and the ‘AASIST’ audio detector scored 61.3%, indicating that the audio was AI-manipulated. We contacted the Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU), an initiative of the TIA (formerly the MCA), regarding this video. They shared with us Hiya Audio Intelligence’s analysis, which confirms the possibility of AI manipulation in the audio. Our investigation has revealed that the viral video is a deepfake, with audio clones of General Dwivedi’s voice being used to spread propaganda. India’s Ministry of Defence has also denied the claims made in the video, calling it a deepfake. Vishvas News investigated the user‘s background and found that this handle has previously shared deepfake videos of top Indian Army officers. This profile has been active since December 2022 and has changed its username nine times, and the last change was made in August 2025. Fact-check reports on similar deepfake multimedia circulating on social media can be accessed in Vishvas News’ AI Check section. Conclusion: The video of Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi criticising the Indian government’s policies regarding the Taliban government in Afghanistan is a deepfake. General Dwivedi has not made any such statement. In an event at the NDA, General Dwivedi stated that the Indian Army is fully prepared for “Operation Sindoor 2.0” if necessary. A video from this very program has been manipulated using AI to make a false claim.
