  • Is Walmart decreasing its food prices "back to pre-inflation rates" within one month of President Donald Trump's January 20, 2025, inauguration? No, that's not true: Walmart told Lead Stories that this assertion is false. In an email, the company wrote that "this announcement is not accurate." The claim appeared in a post on Facebook on February 3, 2025, (archived here) with a caption that read: WALMART DECREASES FOOD PRICES BACK TO PRE-INFLATION WITHIN A MONTH OF TRUMP'S ADMINISTRATION #Walmart #Inflation #foodie #entertainment A man in the video said the following: Walmart is in -- decreasing all food prices back to pre-inflation rates. You'd think that would have happened, but not for Trump, in some way? Good for Walmart. This is how the post appeared on Facebook at the time of writing: (Source: Facebook screenshot taken Wed Feb 5 04:37:00 2025 UTC) Walmart spokesperson Tricia Moriarty told Lead Stories that this rumor is false, writing in an email received on February 6, 2025: While Walmart is always working to keep prices low, this announcement is not accurate and the post did not come from Walmart. A page on Facebook that published the video, "Eric Deters for Kentucky and America," was described in its information section as a "Public figure." According to Deters' website, he was a former candidate for Kentucky's 4th Congressional District. As of this publication, the Kentucky Secretary of State (archived here) did not list Deters as a candidate, while the Federal Election Commission reported (archived here) that he was a Republican House candidate during the 2023-24 two-year period. Deters provided no evidence to support the claim that Walmart was lowering its food prices to pre-inflation levels. Included in the video on Facebook's caption was "#entertainment."
