  • Fact Check: NYPD didn't water cannon Israel supporters at JFK airport, video is from Jerusalem A five-month-old video from Jerusalem was falsely claimed to depict an incident at JFK airport in the US Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video dates back to July 2023 and shows Israeli police firing water cannons at people protesting Israel's judicial reforms. On December 27, hundreds of pro-Palestine protestors gathered at two of America's busiest airports, Los Angeles International Airport and New York's John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), blocking the entrances. Following the protests, a video of a police truck using a water cannon against demonstrators was widely shared. The video shows several people with Israeli flags in their hands hiding behind a wall as a water cannon blasted at them. People sharing this video alleged that the New York Police Department shot water at pro-Israel demonstrators after they took over the airport road. "Who would love to be pulling the trigger? NYPD Uses a Water Cannon at JFK Airport after deeming protesters a 'Terror Threat' for taking over Airport Road," read one such post. Its archived version can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video is five months old and not from the United States at all. OUR PROBE A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a five-month-old news report from the Independent that featured the video in question, making it evident that the clip was unrelated to recent protests at America's airports. According to this report, the demonstration took place in the Israeli capital Jerusalem and central Tel Aviv and protestors were opposing controversial judicial overhaul plans in the country. A subsequent search yielded several photographs of water cannons firing on protesters in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, published by the Guardian on July 25, 2023. Reportedly, protestors started demonstrating following a vote in the Israeli parliament on a contested bill that limited the power of the country's Supreme Court to void government decisions. Israeli lawmakers approved a significant law on July 24, as part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's controversial justice reform plan. With the passing of this law, there were waves of mass demonstrations and accusations that Netanyahu was attempting to impose authoritarianism on the country. The Times of Israel reported that at least 33 people were arrested and 20 were hospitalised during the protest due to alleged police brutality. Thus, it’s clear that an old-unrelated video from Jerusalem was falsely linked to recent protests in the United States.
