  • Fact Check: Viral brawl video not linked to current Italy migrant crisis India Today found that the video is more than two years old and not from Lampedusa. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from a 2021 incident in Marotta di Mondolfo in Italy, and is unrelated to the recent migrant crisis in Lampedusa. Recently, the Italian island of Lampedusa saw an unprecedented influx of migrants—7,000 people arrived within just two days. This sudden surge, which exceeds the island's resident population, has led local politicians to call for emergency aid. Lampedusa has been a primary entry point for those crossing from North Africa and is a longstanding hotspot in Europe's migration crisis. Now a video showing a confrontation between police and a group of young men is making rounds on social media. The video is being falsely attributed to recent clashes between police and migrants on the island. Archived version of one such post can be seen here. The video was shared on social media platform X, with the caption, "#BREAKING | Italy: Direct clashes between migrants and police began on the island of Lampedusa. Illegal immigrants throw stones at the carabinieri and demand that they be sent to Europe." India Today's investigation found that the viral video dates back to a 2021 incident in Italy and has no relation to the recent migrant situation in Lampedusa, one of the Pelagie Islands in the southern Mediterranean Sea. Our Probe A reverse image search of the video's keyframes led to multiple media reports from August 2021. According to a report published on August 7, 2021, the video was filmed in Marotta di Mondolfo in the Province of Pesaro e Urbino. The violent brawl involved dozens of young people exiting a music event at the Miu Club in Marotta. The altercation began between a young Albanian man and a Senegalese man and escalated into a large-scale fight that included stabbings. Some reports suggest the conflict originated from drug-related disputes. Four individuals were identified and arrested following the incident, including the Albanian who initiated the stabbing, another Albanian, a Colombian, and a Senegalese man. The incident drew condemnation from authorities, including the mayor of Marotta di Mondolfo and a member of the Justice and Anti-Mafia Commission. The video was also circulated on social media in August 2021. This clearly makes it over two years old and unrelated to the recent events in Lampedusa.
