  • FACT CHECK: Does This Image Show Twitter Employees Protesting Layoffs? An image shared on Facebook allegedly shows Twitter employees protesting recent layoffs following Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s purchase of the company. Verdict: False The image is digitally altered. The original image, which appears on Flickr, shows a 2013 LGBTQ pride march in Winnipeg, Canada. Fact Check: Twitter laid off approximately half of its work force earlier in November as part of Musk’s purchase of the company, according to CNN. However, some employees have been asked to come back to the company after they were laid off by mistake, Reuters reported. The Facebook image allegedly shows a group of protesters carrying a large sign, with the caption suggesting those in the photo are former employees of the company. “F–k Off Elon Musk Sincerely, Twiter Employees,” the sign the alleged protesters are carrying reads. The image is digitally altered. The original image, which has been posted on the photo-sharing website Flickr, shows a 2013 LGBTQ pride march in Winnipeg, Canada. The marchers, who are dressed in rainbow attire, can be seen carrying a sign that reads, “Wild Prairie Furs & Friends.” The image makes no mention of Musk or Twitter. There are no credible news reports suggesting Twitter employees have publicly protested recent layoffs. However, an open letter circulated within the company before the layoffs, calling the plan “reckless, undermines our users’ and customers’ trust in our platform, and is a transparent act of worker intimidation.” Likewise, neither Musk nor the social media platform’s communications team has publicly commented on the claim via their verified social media accounts. There is also no mention of the purported protests on Twitter’s company news blog. Check Your Fact has contacted Twitter for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received. (RELATED: Did Elon Musk Tweet That He’s Going To Buy And Delete TikTok?) This is not the first false claim that has circulated about Twitter since Musk took over the company. Check Your Fact previously debunked a video claiming Musk fired Twitter’s policy chief, Vijaya Gadde, live on air during a podcast.
