  • Fact Check: UP Police thrashed man for teasing cow? This is a mocktail of three different stories Police action in cases from 2022 and 2023 falsely linked to the viral video of a man mocking a street cow. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video and photo of the police action is from old incidents from 2022 and 2023. They have no links to the viral video of a man mocking a cow. Did a Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh get beaten up by the police for mocking a cow? A video making the rounds on social media shows a man sitting inside a car, telling a cow on the road: “Eid hai, bach ke. Eid hai, Eid. As-salamu alaykum (Be safe, it’s Eid).” The video then shows a photo of a man sitting in front of a police officer. It simultaneously shows a clip of a man being held by police, having trouble walking. The latter could be seen saying, “Gai humari mata hai (Cow is our mother),” repeatedly in pain. A person shared the clip on Facebook writing, “Abdul Bhai forgot that he is in Uttar Pradesh.” Some people, replying to one such post, condemned such action by police merely for making a joke. India Today Fact Check found that the photo and video of the police action are unrelated to the viral clip of the man mocking the cow. In fact, even the photo and the video are from two separate cases. Our Probe In one such viral post on Instagram, we noticed people commenting that the young man in the viral video was not Muslim, but Hindu. They added that he later deleted this video and apologised for this act of mocking a cow. Others added that his name was Nakul. Further searches led us to an Instagram post from September 19 this year. The caption of the video asked users to share the clip, seeking police action. This video contained a screenshot of an Instagram account that originally shared the cow mocking video in question. It belonged to a man named Nakul, and the username was “@n___nakul_”. The account has been deleted now. We did not find any news reports about the arrest of this man for mocking a cow. The police did not comment on the matter when we reached out. The man with the cop Reverse searching the photo of the man and the cop led us to multiple news reports about this incident dated July 1, 2023. According to them, police filed a case against nine people for throwing pieces of flesh near a Hanuman Temple on the Gurugram-Faridabad road. The reports carried a photo of the two rag pickers, Obirul and Nadeem, arrested by the police in this case. The picture seen in the viral video of a man and a cop is a cropped version of the same. Police encounter from 2022 Reverse searching keyframes from the video of the man saying “Gai humari mata hai” led us to news reports in AajTak and News18. These reports from October 28, 2022, stated that Irshad alias Sonu was arrested by the Ghaziabad police for smuggling cows. During the arrest, police reportedly shot at him when he tried to flee. He was then filmed chanting “Gai humari mata hai” repeatedly after getting shot. It is thus clear that police action in old cases from 2022 and 2023 was falsely linked to a video of a man mocking a cow and was shared with a communal spin.
