  • Last Updated on September 18, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post claims that 850 deaths have occurred in Monterrey, Mexico due to myocarditis in the past two weeks. We fact-checked and found this claim to be False. The Claim A Facebook post with the caption, “ EYE HAD NO IDEA ABOUT THIS ONE UNTIL NOW. IN MEXICO 🇲🇽, 850 PEOPLE DIED FROM MYOCARDITIS IN THE SPAN OF JUST 2 WEEKS !!!” Shares the video of a woman claiming that 850 people died in Monterrey, a city in the Mexican state of Nuevo León due to myocarditis and doctors are coming out and stating this. Fact Check What is Myocarditis? Myocarditis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the myocardium, which is the muscular middle layer of the heart wall. This inflammation can weaken the heart muscle and affect its ability to pump blood effectively. Myocarditis can be caused by various factors, including viral infections (such as enteroviruses, adenoviruses, and certain types of influenza), bacterial infections, autoimmune diseases, certain medications, and toxins. Common symptoms of myocarditis can include chest pain or discomfort, fatigue, rapid or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, swelling in the legs or ankles (edema), and flu-like symptoms. In severe cases, myocarditis can lead to heart failure, arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms), and other serious complications. Understanding the nuances of vaccine-induced myocarditis is essential, especially in light of claims about its impact on mortality rates, as discussed in our analysis of the alleged deaths in Monterrey. Did Myocarditis cause 850 deaths to occur in Monterrey? No. There is no scientific evidence to prove that 850 deaths occurred in Monterrey, Mexico due to Myocarditis. But, there has been a sudden spike in the number of deaths in Mexico City. But, the cause of death has been associated with heat stroke. Various news reports have suggested that there have been more than 100 cases of deaths in the region of Mexico due to heat waves in the late June period. The attached snaps mentioned in the video also stated that 850 deaths occurred due to heat stroke. Except for those snaps, which she overwrites as “The government is lying” and “Myocarditis is the cause,” she does not mention any sources proving that Myocarditis is the cause and that claim is not supported by any other credible sources. Also, the number 850 was later denied by the director of Civil registry who stated that the person who mentioned this, Miguel Gallardo stated that in his personal capacity and not that of the agency. Myocarditis has been recognized as a rare adverse effect of Covid vaccination and it does not cause more myocarditis than the virus.. Also, unlike popular claims, COVID-19 vaccines are safe and do not increase the risk of autoimmune myocarditis. Hence, the claim stands false until there is a proven record of the number of deaths and their causative factor to be Myocarditis in the region. Conspiracy claims are not new. THIP Media has also fact-checked a claim which stated that deaths among athletes are due to vaccine-related myocarditis.
