In Short - Viral video falsely linked to Los Angeles fires - Incident actually from Chile happened in January 2024 - Plane crashed near Talca city, pilot died The Los Angeles wildfires have so far killed at least 24 people, displaced thousands, and destroyed over 12,000 structures. As firefighters struggled to control the blaze, a video of a plane engulfed in flames losing control and eventually crashing on a highway was widely shared online. As per the social media users, this plane was en route to control the wildfire in Los Angeles, but it crashed on the way. An X user wrote alongside the video: “Terrifying. Watch the haunting moment firefighting planes crash in the fiery apocalypse of Los Angeles during the relentless California fires”. Its archive can be seen here. India Today found that the video has nothing to do with the Los Angeles wildfires. This January 2024 video is from the South American country Chile. OUR PROBE Upon reverse-searching keyframes from the video, we found it in news reports from January 2024. We noticed that the viral video was a mirror or lateral inversion of the video in those reports. The video in question was reportedly from Chile’s Talca city where a plane crashed near an airport on January 15, 2024. The plane was en route to control a fire when it crashed after the pilot lost control. The pilot died, and four others were injured. The Daily Mail and Al Jazeera also reported about this plane crash at that time. Thus, it’s clear this year-old video is from Chile, not Los Angeles.
