  • Fact Check: Not from Mominpur communal clash, this photo is from 2018 violence in Raniganj, WB Fact Check team has found that a photo circulating on social media is not from the recent communal clash in Kolkata's Mominpur but is from 2018 violence in West Bengal's Raniganj. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This photo is neither recent nor from Kolkata’s Mominpur. It’s a 2018 photo shot during communal clashes in Raniganj, West Bengal. Clashes erupted between two communities in Kolkata's Mominpur area on October 9, after religious flags put up for Milad un-Nabi were allegedly vandalised. The Calcutta High Court, while hearing a writ petition relating to the incident of communal violence, ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team comprising experienced police officials to probe into it. Reportedly, the Bharatiya Janata Party has claimed that Hindus were attacked and the police didn't act because the houses being attacked belonged to a certain community. Police sources, on the other hand, have reportedly denied the allegations, and said 38 people were arrested, including BJP state President Sukanta Majumdar. On October 10, Firstpost published a news report on the incident, titled: “West Bengal: Communal violence erupts in Kolkata, BJP slams Mamata Banerjee”. The photo used in the story’s cover showed a cart on fire in a narrow lane as police forces in riot gear passed through. It was captioned, "There was massive violence in sensitive areas such as Mominpur and neighbouring Ekbalpur area of Kolkata. Several vehicles were vandalised and set on fire". News aggregators like Dailyhunt and MSN picked up the story and used the same photo. It was also shared on social media by many. AFWA's investigation found that the photo was not from Mominpur, as claimed. It was from 2018's communal clashes in Raniganj, West Bengal. AFWA Probe Upon reverse-searching the photo, we found that it was used earlier in many news reports. The Indian Express and India Today used it in their reports on 2018's Raniganj violence. Is this photo from Raniganj? When we searched for "Raniganj violence" online, the results included this photo and other similar ones. Per news reports that contained these photos, it was a PTI photo that was supposedly shot during 2018's Asansol-Raniganj violence. This is not the first time this photo has been the same photo was also shared with misleading claims on social media. Following the 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal, it was shared online by many who claimed it showed scenes of violence at the time. Alt News had fact-checked it then and concluded the same. Therefore, it is clear that this photo is not from the recent communal clash in Kolkata’s Mominpur. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
