  • In the aftermath of the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 25, 2026, social media users alleged a photo showed Stephen Miller, the deputy White House chief of staff, using his pregnant wife, Katie Miller, as a "human shield." For example, one X post (archived) featuring the image with the caption, "Stephen Miller using his prego wife as human shield," received tens of millions of views. Other users shared the same photo and rumor — alleging Stephen Miller positioned Katie Miller to take bullets for him — on Bluesky (archived), Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived), LinkedIn (archived), Reddit, Threads and TikTok (archived). (@WUTangKids/X) In short, this claim miscaptioned the image. Users shared misleading captions with a genuine picture by Getty Images photographer Chip Somodevilla. At least three different videos of the Millers recorded shortly after shots rang out — as well as maps from the Washington Hilton International Ballroom, on the venue's concourse level — confirmed the truth about this matter. The clips showed that, after the Millers sheltered in place at a ballroom table with a man the White House identified as a U.S. Secret Service agent, the three headed for the exits with Stephen Miller and the agent positioned behind Katie Miller — with their backs facing the location of the suspect, whom officials captured one floor above on the terrace level. In addition to the video evidence, (Chip Somodevilla accessed via Getty Images) A White House spokesperson told Snopes that Stephen Miller was shielding Katie Miller and that the picture in question showed Stephen Miller and the Secret Service agent standing between the suspect's location and Katie Miller. Two days after the shooting, federal authorities charged 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of California with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump, as well as illegally transporting a firearm across state lines and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Officials said a Secret Service agent's ballistic vest was struck by a bullet during the shooting. No one was seriously injured or killed. Mapping the Millers' exit from ballroom Three videos and other pieces of media provided key data about the Millers' exit from the ballroom. Maps published by CNN and another website provided additional information, including the location of the suspect's apprehension. Chronologically, the first video shows Stephen Miller crouching taller than his wife at a table after the shooting. A second clip shows the Secret Service agent beginning to escort the Millers away from the table. A third video captures the Millers and Secret Service agent walking with their heads down toward stage left and away from the suspect's location. That clip, posted by "CBS Evening News" anchor Tony Dokoupil, also showed men, potentially Secret Service agents, helping Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. evacuate, with his wife, Cheryl Hines, following behind. Another one of Somodevilla's pictures hosted on the Getty Images website showed the Millers leaving through the exit doors closest to the stage at stage left, with the ballroom's curtains just barely visible on the left side of the frame. The Hilton website links to a 360-degree view of the ballroom, showing the space with the same curtains next to the stage left doors. Additional research At least one user shared a 6-second video created with artificial intelligence, briefly bringing to life Somodevilla's photo in an inauthentic manner. Some users also claimed Somodevilla's picture showed Trump looming in the background backstage on stage right. That man, appearing in the background and out of focus, resembled the president. We could not yet confirm whether that man truly was Trump. Following the shooting, Katie Miller posted a photo taken prior to the shooting showing her with her husband. She called the evening an "unforgettable night," praised Secret Service agents and referenced her pregnancy with, "Our fourth kid certainly had an eventful evening." For further reading, we've reported on other rumors pertaining to the 2026 correspondent's dinner shooting, including that a 2017 local news video showed second lady Usha Vance appearing with the suspect.
