  • Last Updated on September 20, 2022 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A scene from the movie Captain America has been used by a social media user to claim that the image on the 2011 Time Square billboard is of coronavirus. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False. Although the image having spikes looks similar to the structure of coronavirus, the 2011 billboard was an ad for Barilla pasta. The Claim A scene from the movie Captain America has been misleadingly used to claim that the movie predicted coronavirus based on a spiked structure shown in the background on the 2011 Time Square billboard within the scene. Fact Check Did the Captain America movie foretell Covid? No. The spiked structure shown in the background on the 2011 Time Square billboard is not of coronavirus. The image is not clear enough in the social media posts. Even the image in the YouTube video is not clearly visible. But in a Twitter thread, film critic William Mullally clarified that the image was a 2011 billboard showing an ad for Barilla pasta. Besides this, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website has shown that coronavirus is a term used for viruses having crown-like spikes on the surface. The name ‘coronavirus’ is not related to Corona Extra beer. The word ‘corona’ means crown, which is the logo of the beer brand.
