Quick Take
A social media post claims that coffee and lemon juice can remove underarm hair in just 5 minutes. Our fact check concludes that this claim is False.
The Claim
An Instagram post suggests that a home remedy involving baking soda, coffee powder, Colgate toothpaste, lemon juice, and tomato juice can permanently remove underarm hair in a mere five minutes. The post makes a bold claim that using this mixture will result in hair that is gone forever.
Fact Check
Can a mixture of coffee, baking soda, lemon juice, Colgate and tomato juice permanently remove underarm hair in just 5 minutes?
No, there is no scientific basis for the idea that a combination of coffee, lemon juice, and other ingredients can permanently remove hair. Effective and permanent hair removal usually requires medical procedures, like laser hair removal or electrolysis, which target hair follicles. These methods are clinically proven to significantly reduce hair growth over multiple sessions.
We reached out to Dr Ekansh Shekhar, a Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant in Lucknow, to share his views on the effectiveness of DIY hair removal mixtures. He says, “There is no scientific evidence supporting the use of this combination for hair removal, and it is unlikely to work. Ingredients like baking soda, lemon juice, and toothpaste lack any properties that remove hair. Baking soda may help exfoliate the skin, while lemon juice could only temporarily lighten hair. Toothpaste, on the other hand, can cause skin irritation. Effective permanent hair removal requires methods that target the hair follicles, something this mixture fails to achieve. Additionally, using such a blend can result in skin irritation, blocked pores, and unwanted reactions from combining unrelated substances.”
The allure of quick beauty hacks, like using coffee and lemon juice for hair removal, raises questions about their effectiveness and safety, which is also a concern when considering the potential risks associated with professional cosmetic treatments.
Are home remedies for hair removal effective?
Not really. Many home remedies focus on temporary solutions. For instance, coffee grounds can exfoliate the skin, and lemon juice might lighten hair or skin but won’t affect hair follicles. While these ingredients may improve skin texture, they cannot permanently remove hair.
What are the potential risks of using such mixtures?
Using untested mixtures can irritate sensitive skin, particularly in the underarms. For example:
- Baking Soda: May irritate the skin and disrupt its natural pH.
- Colgate Toothpaste: Designed for teeth, Colgate can cause rashes or allergic reactions on the skin. Despite this, many people include it in home remedies and claim that Colgate can permanently remove hair. But, it is not true.
- Lemon Juice: Its acidity can irritate skin, causing redness, dryness, or even chemical burns, especially when exposed to sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn.
- Tomato Juice: Also acidic, it may irritate or trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Mixing these ingredients without proper knowledge can lead to unwanted skin reactions. Therefore, relying on these remedies can do more harm than good.
Are there effective alternatives for underarm hair removal?
For reliable hair removal, consider options like:
- Shaving: Quick and easy.
- Waxing: Provides longer-lasting results.
- Hair removal creams: Offer quick and pain-free hair removal.
- Laser Treatments: Effective for many, especially with darker hair.
A dermatologist can recommend the best hair removal method based on your hair type and skin sensitivity. Whether it’s shaving, waxing, or using hair removal creams, consulting a professional ensures you choose the safest and most effective option.
We connected with Dr Rashi Soni, Co-founder and Consulting Dermatologist, Aesthetician, and Hair Transplant Surgeon at Rashi Hospital in Mumbai, to know the effective hair removal techniques. She shares her insights: “While many individuals want permanent hair removal, it’s important to note that no method guarantees complete prevention of hair regrowth. Laser treatments and electrolysis are among the most effective options, but they require multiple sessions to manage any returning hair. Usually, when hair regrows, it tends to be finer and lighter. In contrast, natural remedies or DIY mixtures such as baking soda, lemon juice, or toothpaste do not penetrate deeply enough to affect hair follicles or halt hair growth.”
Why do such claims circulate on social media?
Quick fixes for grooming are tempting, and social media often spreads these claims without solid proof. Flashy presentations can make unverified remedies look believable, leading people to trust them. One such home remedy suggests baking soda for hair removal. However, this isn’t proven and does not work. It’s important to be cautious and check reliable sources before trying anything.
What should be considered before trying home remedies?
Before attempting home remedies for hair removal, evaluate their safety and effectiveness:
- Look for evidence-based research or professional opinions on the ingredients.
- What works for one person might not work for another. Always conduct a patch test on a small skin area before widespread application.
- If irritation occurs, stop using it and consult a healthcare professional.
THIP Media Take
The claim that a coffee and lemon juice mixture can permanently remove underarm hair in just five minutes is false. Effective hair removal methods require professional intervention or regular maintenance, and home remedies may do more harm than good. Always consult professionals before trying new grooming techniques, especially for sensitive skin areas. Relying on trusted information ensures safer and more effective results in personal care.
