  • Last Updated on January 2, 2025 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media video claims that water with iron scissors can treat delayed speech in kids. After fact checking, we found this claim to be false. The Claim An Instagram post suggests that washing the tip of iron scissors in water in a bowl and feeding this water to a child seven times can resolve delayed speech issues. The video basically implies that this practice can help toddlers or young children overcome speech delays or related problems. Fact Check Can washing the tip of iron scissors in water and giving it to a child treat speech delays? No, this method is neither safe nor effective. While iron deficiency can indirectly affect language development, washing scissors and using the water as a treatment for speech delays has no scientific basis. Speech development in children depends on a combination of neurological, environmental, and developmental factors. Drinking water soaked or washed with iron scissors has no proven connection to speech improvement, as the iron from the scissors is unlikely to dissolve in a way that is beneficial or bioavailable. Additionally, this practice poses potential health risks due to contamination from rust or other impurities on the scissors. We spoke with Dr Almas Fatma, MBBS, Diploma in Family Medicine, PG in Digital Health, General Physician from Navi Mumbai, for her opinion on using water with iron scissors for speech development. She says, “The claim that washing iron scissors and giving the water to a child to improve speech development is a baseless myth with no scientific support. There is no evidence to suggest that iron scissors or water can impact speech growth. Speech and language development are influenced by neurological, cognitive, and social factors. Additionally, iron scissors may contain rust or harmful substances, which could cause health issues, and they are not sterile, posing a risk of infection.” Dr Fatma adds, “Speech development requires proper stimulation, such as interaction with caregivers and exposure to language. If there are concerns about speech delays, parents should consult a pediatrician or speech therapist. Instead of relying on unproven methods, focus on encouraging communication through talking, singing, and reading, and seek professional guidance if needed. Early intervention is key to addressing speech delays effectively.” On a related note, we have come across claims suggesting that almonds and butter can cure stammering in kids. There is also a claim that keeping a bay leaf under the tongue can cure stammering. However, these claims are false. Is iron deficiency linked to speech delay? Well, not definitively, but iron deficiency does have an indirect connection to speech delay. Iron is essential for brain development, and its deficiency can contribute to developmental delays, including in language skills. A 2021 study found that children with iron deficiency anaemia had poorer language development, but their skills improved with treatment. Similarly, a 2020 study showed that iron deficiency in infants led to reduced interaction with caregivers, which negatively impacted verbal skills. A 2001 study revealed that iron deficiency affects 20-50% of the global population, particularly in developing countries, and can cause anaemia, weakness, poor growth, and cognitive issues. Severe iron deficiency can affect brain functions and overall development, but speech delay is rarely caused solely by iron deficiency. If iron deficiency is suspected, it’s important to consult a paediatrician who may recommend iron-rich foods or supplements. Using scissors as a source of iron is neither safe nor effective. What are the causes and red flags of delayed speech and language development? Delayed speech and language development can result from various factors, and certain signs can indicate potential concerns. Here are the causes and red flags to watch for: Causes of delayed speech and language development: - Hearing problems - Issues during birth affecting hearing - Brain processing disorders (e.g. developmental delay, intellectual disability, autism) - Language disorders - Speech production problems (e.g. articulation issues, motor speech disorders) - Physical conditions (e.g. cleft lip, cleft palate) - Lack of a stimulating environment Red flags in speech and language development: - Not responding to sounds at any age - Losing language or social skills - No babbling by 9 months - No pointing or gesturing by 12 months - No clear words by 16 months - No following others’ gaze by 15 months - No two-word phrases by 24 months - Can’t follow simple commands by 24 months - Speech unclear at 36 months - Unusual nasal voice at any age - Odd vocal tone or pitch at any age What are safe approaches to address delayed speech in kids? The best way to address speech delays is through speech therapy and a medical evaluation. Since delays can stem from factors like hearing issues, developmental disorders, or environmental influences, early intervention is crucial. Speech therapy and medical assessment help identify the cause and guide treatment. Encouraging communication through reading, conversation, and interactive play also supports speech development. We reached out to Dr Ubaid ur Rahman, General Physician at Holy Mission Clinic in New Delhi, for his expertise on ways to address speech delays in kids. He says, “The best way to address delayed speech in children is to start with early intervention. Speech therapy can be incredibly helpful, as it provides tailored support to the child’s needs. It’s also important to create a language-rich environment by talking, reading, and singing with your child regularly. If you’re concerned about your child’s speech development, it’s always a good idea to consult a pediatrician or a speech therapist to identify the cause and get the right help.” Can traditional remedies harm more than help? Yes, unreliable remedies can pose health risks. Even though traditional remedies are often passed down with good intentions, they can sometimes cause harm. In this case, using scissors in water can introduce bacteria or toxic elements, which is likely to give rise to health issues. Parents should rely on evidence-based methods and seek professional advice for developmental concerns. THIP Media Take The claim that water with iron scissors can treat delayed speech in kids is false. Speech delays need proper medical evaluation and intervention. Resorting to unscientific practices not only wastes time but may also risk the child’s health. Always consult qualified professionals for developmental concerns.
