  • FACT CHECK: Did U.S. Threaten Uganda For Their Stance On Homosexuality? A video shared on social media purports that the U.S. has threatened to withhold aid as a consequence of Uganda’s prohibition on homosexuality. Verdict: Misleading The video is from 2014. There has been no recent response to Uganda’s stance on homosexuality. Fact Check: Uganda’s trade war has led the country to look for their milk provider in northern Africa, The East African reported. The son of Yoweri Museveni, the Ugandan leader, may stand for Ugandan Presidency in 2026 as some speculate Museveni intends to impose a monarchy, according to Reuters. The Facebook post purports the U.S. will not give aid to Uganda as long as homosexuality is outlawed in the country. The video starts with a short clip from a White House Press Secretary briefing discussing Uganda’s efforts to ban homosexuality. “Legalise lgbt or no aid,” the text on the video reads. “Usa gives final warning to Uganda to legalise homosexuality.” This clip dates back to 2014 when the government of Uganda passed a law that made homosexuality punishable with life imprisonment. President Obama’s White House Press Secretary, Jay Carney, lambasted this development saying, “It’s a sad day for Uganda.” The United States did take action to diminish aid for Uganda because of this law, according to Reuters. However, the law was soon overturned in Ugandan court. Since that time Uganda has seen a significant increase in aid from the U.S. Recently, Uganda has revisited a ban on homosexuality, but there are no credible news reports that suggests there has been any threats to Uganda’s aid at this time.
