  • FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show An ‘Ascension’ Occurring After The Recent Earthquake In Turkey? A video shared on Facebook allegedly shows an “ascension,” or a floating glowing ball, following the recent earthquake in Turkey. Verdict: False Text in the top left corner of the video specifies that the video is digitally fabricated. Fact Check: Over 11,600 people died after an earthquake that struck Turkey Feb. 6 with the death toll expected to continue to rise, according to USA Today. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday admitted there were issues with the government’s initial response to the tragedy following criticism for its slow efforts, Reuters reported. The Facebook video appears to show a ball of light flying through a city at nighttime and increasing in size following the earthquake. The red ball of light flies over the skyline before rising and expanding. “ASCENSION HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IN TURKEY AFTER THOUSANDS DEAD !!!” the post’s caption reads. “Proof Ascension happening now in Turkey during Earthquakes,” text shown on the video reads. The video is computer-generated. The words “computer recreation” appear in the top left corner in Spanish, implying that the video was not genuine, but instead was digitally fabricated. Glowing spheres can be easily created with video editing software, as demonstrated in YouTube tutorials. Check Your Fact found no credible news reports mentioning a glowing ball or “ascension” happening in Turkey. (RELATED: Does This Video Show A Building Collapsing Following The Recent Earthquake In Turkey And Syria?) This is not the first time misinformation has spread regarding Turkey’s recent earthquake. Check Your Fact recently debunked a video claiming to show a tsunami occurring after the earthquake.
