  • Fact Check: Iranian lawmakers didn't chant 'Death to America' amid Israel-Hamas war India Today found that the viral 'Death to America' video featuring Iranian lawmakers is from 2020, and unrelated to current events. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video of Iranian parliamentarians chanting "Death to America" is from 2020. This happened after the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. Following the Hamas attack on Israel, a video purportedly showing Iranian lawmakers chanting anti-America slogans in Parliament was widely shared. Social media users sharing the video containing the CNN logo claimed that legislators were chanting "Death to America". One Twitter user, sharing the video, wrote, "Happening now - Iran yelling 'Death to America!' I guess $6 BILLION WASN’T ENOUGH!" India Today Fact Check found that the video of Iranian parliamentarians chanting "Death to America" dates back to 2020, following the killing of Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani. Our Probe Upon a keyword search, we found the viral video on CNN's YouTube channel, shared on January 5, 2020. The video was titled: "Lawmakers chant 'death to America' in Iranian parliament." The video description stated that Hossein Dehghan, the military adviser to Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, said his country's response to the killing by the United States of one its most influential commanders will certainly be a military response "against military sites." Additionally, we found a similar video shot from another angle on the YouTube channel of USA Today, also shared on January 5, 2020. The arrangement of legislators in this video mirrors that seen in the viral video and the one shared by CNN. In January 2020, General Qasem Soleimani, Iran's most powerful military commander, was killed in a US airstrike, in Iraq. Soleimani, heading Iran's elite Quds Force, played a pivotal role in Iranian military operations in the Middle East. The strike ordered by former US President Donald Trump resulted in the death of Soleimani and other Iran-backed military figures at Baghdad airport. It’s worth noting that Iran has categorically rejected allegations of involvement in the Hamas assault on Israel. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani dismissed the claims as unfounded and politically motivated, asserting Iran's commitment to non-intervention in the decisions of other countries, including Palestine. Thus, it’s clear that the viral video is not recent and not related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
