India Today Fact Check
This video is from March 2023, when the BJP's Basavaraj Bommai was the Chief Minister of Karnataka, not Siddaramaiah.
A video making the rounds on social media purports to show how new Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah kept the Santosh Trophy-winning football team waiting on the footpath outside his residence. In the video, a man questioned why the football team was kept waiting on the footpath for hours to meet the chief minister. He then criticised the Karnataka Football Association for not valuing the players.
On Facebook, one person shared the video and wrote, “The Karnataka state football team recently won the Santosh Trophy in Saudi Arabia, and the players were treated like this by the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Congress members have plenty of time for terrorists like Yasin Malik and Afzal Guru. Courts are opened at midnight to defend terrorists.” The archived version of such a post can be seen here.
India Today Fact Check found that this incident is months-old. At the time, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Basavaraj Bommai was the Karnataka Chief Minister, not Siddaramaiah.
Our Probe
According to a Times Of India report, the Karnataka football team won the Santosh Trophy on March 4, 2023, beating Meghalaya 3-2 in Saudi Arabia's Riyadh. Per the report, Karnataka last won the title 54 years ago.
Notably, when the Karnataka squad won the trophy, the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government was in power in Karnataka, not Congress. The results of the Karnataka assembly election were announced on May 13, and Siddaramaiah took oath as the Chief Minister on May 22.
We found news reports in the IB Times and Asianet featuring images of former Chief Minister Bommai with the football players confirming this meet-up.
The IB Times report, however, also criticised Bommai for making the players wait on the footpath and not even inviting them inside his residence. We compared screengrabs of the home seen in the viral video with images of Bommai's bungalow from news reports which confirmed that the players were indeed waiting outside the then CM's house.
The video, which has gone viral, was made by a YouTuber, Dhanraj Dhurve, who makes videos on Indian football. We found the full video about this incident uploaded to his channel on June 8. It was titled, “Indian Football & players aren't for humiliation & disrespect. Why always us?”.
So, while we could not independently find the person who recorded this video, it is more than clear that it dates from March 2023, when Basavaraj Bommai was the chief minister.
