| - The 2026 Super Bowl halftime show, headlined by Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, was performed almost entirely in Spanish. In the days surrounding the event, U.S. President Donald Trump and several senior administration officials criticized the show, focusing largely on the use of Spanish rather than English.
Following the Super Bowl, some people on social media claimed (archived) that U.S.Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, "If Jesus wanted America to speak Spanish and have the Super Bowl halftime show in a foreign language, he would not have written the Bible in English."
The rumored quote was shared by people critical of the Trump administration, who highlighted that multiple people originally wrote the books of the Bible primarily in Hebrew and Greek.
The claim was shared on social media sites such as Threads (archived), Reddit (archived) and X (archived). Many Snopes readers emailed us questions and searched our website to find out if Noem really said that the Bible was written in English.
However, the rumor was false. The quote originated on a satirical Facebook page that clearly labeled it as such.
The earliest version that we found appeared in this post (archived) from the Facebook page Mrs. Putin, which describes itself as a satire/parody account playing a fictional character.
While some of the posts that later spread the rumor did not include the image posted by Mrs. Putin, many did. These posts, such as the one highlighted at the beginning of this article, included Mrs. Putin's watermarks labeling the image as satire.

The Noem English Bible quote is no different. The image includes the logo of a "Fox Mews Chanel" instead of "Fox News Channel," which is the same misspelled logo that appeared in three separate Mrs. Putin images fact-checked by Snopes.
Additionally, "Fox Mews Chanel" attributes the quote to "Kristi Noaim" instead of "Kristi Noem," and refers to her title as "Homelad Suckretary" instead of "Homeland Security Secretary."
The account pointed out these giveaways in the comments of its Noem post.
We also searched for the photo of Noem used in the image and for the supposed quote.
The photo, published by the New York Times in January 2026, shows Noem announcing the arrests of people she said were connected to a Dominican street gang in New York City. Various searches did not reveal any credible news reporting or sourcing for the English Bible quote. Noem did not post anything about the Bible being in English to either of her two (archived) X accounts (archived) in the days immediately before and after the Super Bowl.
