  • Fact Check: NOT Tibet, this old earthquake video is from Japan India Today found that the video is from Japan when an earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in January 2024. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from Japan and shows a quake that struck the Noto Peninsula in January 2024. Close to a hundred people died in an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 that hit Tibet and Nepal on January 7. A video allegedly showing the earthquake is now viral on Facebook. In it, houses can be seen shaking violently on a street and eventually collapsing. The caption of a post featuring the video reads “Ya Allah Reham Massive Earthquake 7.1 strikes Nepal-Tibet border, 95 died as 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Nepal-Tibet border.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today found that the video is from Japan when an earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in January 2024. Our Probe Upon reverse-searching keyframes from the video, we found it in several Japanese reports from February 2024. As per a report in The Japan News, the video was recorded on a dashcam when an earthquake struck Suzu, part of the Ishikawa Prefecture in the Noto Peninsula of Japan on January 1, 2024. The video was released later by a social welfare corporation that operates nursing homes in Suzu. The earthquake also caused a tsunami in the region. There are several video reports about the viral video on YouTube. A recent report in Nippon says that the earthquake resulted in nearly 500 deaths, which includes 228 direct fatalities and 261 related deaths. While the visuals of the Tibet-Nepal earthquake are horrifying, as can be seen in this Deutsche Welle video report, it’s more than clear the viral video is unrelated to it.
