Former US President Donald Trump held a major campaign rally on February 23 in South Bronx, his first election campaign event in New York City since 2016. Following this, a photo of a huge gathering in an urban area was widely shared on social media, with claims that it shows Trump’s Bronx rally. A Facebook user shared the viral photo, and wrote, “Pretty good crowd for Trump in the Bronx.” India Today Fact Check found that the viral photo is from former US President Barack Obama’s rally in 2008 near the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri. Our Probe A reverse image search led us to several news reports from October 2008. A report from STLtoday.com, dated October 18, 2008, about former US President Barack Obama’s rally in St. Louis, Missouri, featured the viral photo. It noted that Obama’s rally drew 100,000 people. The report also included several other pictures from the rally. Another news outlet reported on this Obama rally and called it the largest crowd for an Obama event in the US. Similar reports of the Obama campaign in St. Louis containing the viral picture can be seen here and here. Trump’s rally in South Bronx is being seen as an attempt to make inroads with Hispanic and Black voters ahead of the elections scheduled for November. Thus, it’s clear that a photo from Obama’s rally in St. Louis from 2008 was falsely shared as a recent Trump rally in New York City.
