  • FACT CHECK: Is California Governor Gavin Newsom Considering Plans To Secede From The Union? A viral post shared on X claims California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is purportedly considering seceding from the Union following President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 victory. 🚨 REPORT: Governor Gavin Newsome is considering plans to secede from the Union in order to prevent Trump from deporting illegal aliens and implementing Voter ID laws. — Publius (@OcrazioCornPop) November 9, 2024 Verdict: False The claim is false. Newsom has not repeated the claim via his website or verified social media accounts, and there is no other evidence to support the claim. Fact Check: Newsom is set to meet with President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C. this week, according to Fox News. The meeting follows Newsom’s efforts to “Trump-Proof” California’s progressive policies, the outlet reported. The X post, which has garnered over seven million views as of writing, claims Newsom is purportedly considering seceding from the Union following Trump’s 2024 election victory. “REPORT: Governor Gavin Newsome [sic] is considering plans to secede from the Union in order to prevent Trump from deporting illegal aliens and implementing Voter ID laws,” the post, which does not provide a source to support its claim, reads. The claim is false. According to a Nov. 7 article from The Associated Press, Newsom “called for lawmakers to convene a special session ahead of another Trump presidency to safeguard the state’s progressive policies.” Newsom has also “called on the Legislature to meet in December and give the attorney general’s office more funding to fight federal challenges,” according to the outlet. The article did not mention anything about Newsom purportedly considering plans to secede from the Union, however. (RELATED: Does A Michigan Data Report Show Election Fraud Through Multiple Votes By A Single Voter?) Likewise, Newsom does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim via his website or his verified social media accounts. In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. If Newsom was actually considering plans to secede from the Union, multiple media outlets would’ve covered it, yet none have. Actually, the opposite is true. On Nov. 11, PolitiFact debunked the claim, referencing Newsom’s proclamation to convene a special session of the California State Legislature ahead of Trump’s inauguration. Check Your Fact has contacted Newsom’s office for comment.
