  • Fact Check: This Hashim Amla fasting story being used to criticise Shami is NOT TRUE Hashim Amla himself had said that he was not fasting when he scored 311 runs against England. Listen to Story Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has faced criticism from a Muslim cleric for not observing a fast during the holy month of Ramadan. On March 5, India played the semi-final of 2025 Champions Trophy against Australia. While India beat the Aussies to reach the final, a picture of Shami drinking an energy drink went viral on social media. While some praised Shami for prioritising cricket, several others, including a cleric from Bareilly, criticised him for not observing a fast. Amid this, many social media users are using another Muslim cricketer to criticise Shami. This cricketer is South African legend Hashim Amla. Many are claiming that when Amla scored his maiden triple hundred against England, he was fasting during Ramadan. Users are comparing Amla and Shami and criticising the latter. A user wrote, “Hashim Amla scored a triple century while fasting, but Mohammad Shami needed water after the first over List soms are calling him a 'national hero'. The double standards are real”. India Today Fact Check found that Amla himself had said that he was not fasting when he scored 311 runs against England. OUR PROBE The test match in which Amla scored the triple hundred against England was played from July 19, 2012 at The Oval. In the same year, the month of Ramadan started from July 19. On the second day of the match, Amla scored 311 runs without getting out. Taking hints from the above mentioned details, we ran a keyword search and found an article by The Guardian, published on July 22, 2012. According to this news report, “The only surprise is that this devout Muslim is eating at all, for it is Ramadan and in the past not even Test cricket has been allowed to interrupt the vigilance of his religious observance. Here, though, he has put fasting on hold”. The report has also quoted Amla saying that he was not fasting while playing. Amla said, "Because I'm travelling away from home I don't have to fast. So I haven't been fasting. But I will make it up when I get home." Tristan Holme, a journalist, also wrote about Amla’s 311* innings at The Oval. In an article published on Cricbuzz, Holme wrote, “And as it was Ramadan, Amla did not drink any water out on the field - although he was not fasting on match days, he kept his consumption to the confines of the dressing room out of respect for his fellow Muslims who were.” A report by SA Cricketmag has also mentioned that Amla was not fasting when he scored the triple century against England in the 2012 test match. It is thus clear that users are falsely claiming that Amla was fasting during his 300* innings, just to criticise Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami.
