India Today Fact Check
This CGI video has been on the internet since as early as 2018. It has nothing to do with Cyclone Biparjoy.
Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall on the Gujarat coast on the evening of June 15. In preparation, the Gujarat government has evacuated around 75,000 people from coastal and low-lying areas to safety.
Several videos and photos purportedly showing the cyclone in action have already gone viral on social media. In this article, we will fact-check two such videos.
Boat in stormy waters
The first video shows a boat navigating large waves and strong winds. Those sharing the video claimed it was recently recorded off the coast of Gujarat. The archived version of the post can be seen here.
Reverse-searching frames from the video, we found that the same clip was shared on the Facebook page of "RNLI Fraserburgh Lifeboat" on January 22, 2021. The accompanying text stated, “A short video taken by Larry Wood today as Fraserburgh ALB ‘Willie and May Gall’ opened up the harbour making ready for our run-in.”
On the same day, the page also shared another of a similar-looking boat. We noticed that both boats had the same registration number, proving that they were the same vessel.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution or RNLI is a non-profit organisation that offers search and rescue operations across the British Isles. We found that the page that uploaded these videos was not its official Facebook page. A representative from the organisation, however, told India Today that while their team may not have captured the video, the boat featured in the video did belong to the RNLI.
So, it’s clear that this video had nothing to do with Cyclone Biparjo, or even India for that matter.
A tornado’s formation
The second video of a tornado forming all of a sudden over a sea allegedly showed Cyclone Biparjoy hitting the Gujarat coast.
“The dangerous encirclement of the storm coming towards Gujarat was caught on camera,” wrote a Twitter user while sharing it. The archived version of the post can be seen here.
Using a reverse search on the video’s keyframes, we found the same clip on the YouTube channel "orphicframer", shared on December 22, 2018.
According to the video's title, it was a computer-generated imagery or CGI simulation of a tornado in New Jersey. Its description further stated that it was created using Adobe After Effects and Cinema 4D.
We also found that the channel was full of CGI videos. Thus, it’s clear that this video as well had nothing to do with Cyclone Biparjoy.
