Argentina’s nail-biting victory against France in the FIFA World Cup final on December 18 has the team’s fans across the world celebrating, and how. Amid this, a video of Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo throwing a reporter’s microphone into a lake, allegedly his reaction to Argentina’s win, has gone viral on social media. The Ronaldo-led Portugal squad crashed out of the 2022 World Cup in the quarter-final match against Morocco. The archived version of the post can be seen here.
AFWA’s investigation found that the video is years old and not related to the 2022 FIFA World Cup at all.

Multiple people on Twitter pointed out that the video in question was old. With the help of a keyword search, we found the same video carried by media organisations including the BBC and The Guardian in June 2016.
Per the news reports, this video is from Lyon in France. The incident happened when Ronaldo was on a morning team walk, just hours before Portugal’s final Euro 2016 Group F game against Hungary. A reporter from the Portuguese media outlet Correio da Manha approached Ronaldo and asked whether he was prepared for the day’s match. Ronaldo, who was visibly frustrated, grabbed the reporter’s microphone and threw it into a nearby lake. Reports also said the soccer player’s frustrations stemmed from his poor performance in the opening games.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo has so far not made any comments on Argentina's victory. The soccer player has also refrained from publicly congratulating his rival, Lionel Messi. It is hence clear that the video in question is more than six years old and does not show Ronaldo’s reaction to Argentina’s win in the FIFA World Cup.
