Quick Take
A Facebook post claims that a Miracle Mineral Solution can cure various diseases such as autism, parasites and depression. We did a fact check and found that this claim is false.
The Claim
A post doing rounds on social media shows a photo of a bleaching solution. The post reads: “Drinking my miracle mineral solution. It has cured my autism, parasites and depression. You should too.” A Wikipedia link of the miracle mineral solution is also present in the post.
Fact Check
What is Magical Mineral Solution?
Magical Mineral Solution (MMS), also known as Miracle Mineral Supplement or Master Mineral Solution, is a concoction made by mixing sodium chlorite with an acid like citrus juice or vinegar to produce chlorine dioxide. This industrial bleaching agent has been misleadingly marketed as a cure for diseases such as HIV, cancer, and the common cold. However, chlorine dioxide is a toxic chemical that can cause severe side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dangerously low blood pressure due to dehydration. Sodium chlorite, which is used to create chlorine dioxide, is also harmful if ingested and can lead to acute kidney failure and serious gastrointestinal problems. Recognizing these dangers, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set a maximum safe level of chlorine dioxide in drinking water at 0.8 mg/L.
Can Miracle Mineral Solution really cure diseases?
No, Miracle Mineral Solution cannot cure diseases. There is no scientific evidence to support the claim. It has been falsely promoted as a treatment for various illnesses, including HIV, cancer, and the common cold. In reality, MMS is a toxic industrial bleaching agent that can cause severe health issues, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and life-threatening low blood pressure due to dehydration. The harmful effects far outweigh any unproven benefits.
When we clicked on the Wikipedia link of Magical Mineral Solution mentioned in the post. The text on the page of Magical Mineral Solution refers it as an industrial bleach. It reads: “Miracle Mineral Supplement, often referred to as Miracle Mineral Solution, Master Mineral Solution, MMS or the CD protocol, is chlorine dioxide, an industrial bleach. It is made by mixing sodium chlorite solution with an acid (such as the juices of citrus fruits).”
The Wikipedia page also states that MMS is falsely promoted as a cure for various diseases. Here is a screenshot of the same:
We checked with Dr Ubaid ur Rahman, a General Physician, at Holy Mission Clinic, New Delhi, for his expert opinion on the consumption of MMS for curing various diseases. He says, “I strongly advise against using Miracle Mineral Solution. It is a toxic substance that can cause severe health issues, including nausea, vomiting, and even life-threatening conditions. There is no scientific evidence supporting its use for treating any diseases, including autism, parasites, or depression. It’s important to rely on proven, safe treatments and consult healthcare professionals for medical advice.”
What do the health organisations say about Miracle Mineral Solution?
Upon further investigation, we found an article with headline ‘Danger: Don’t Drink Miracle Mineral Solution or Similar Products’ on the website of U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The article states that FDA warns people not to drink Miracle Mineral Solution as it can be harmful for health. The article reads: “The FDA warns you not to drink sodium chlorite products such as Miracle Mineral Solution. These products can make you sick.”
The article also read: “If you’re drinking “Miracle” or “Master” Mineral Solution or other sodium chlorite products, stop now. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received many reports that these products, sold online as “treatments,” have made consumers sick.”
We also found that the topic was covered across multiple mainstream media websites including Vice (Source) and US Today (Source) where the claim was debunked.
What are the side effects of drinking MMS?
The side effects of using Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) can be severe and include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Life-threatening low blood pressure due to dehydration
- Acute kidney failure (from ingesting sodium chlorite)
- Severe gastrointestinal distress, including inflammation of the intestines
- Symptoms consistent with corrosive injuries, such as stomach pains
Using MMS can be extremely dangerous, even fatal. It is not recommended for treating any medical condition.
It is important to be careful before trusting any health solution on social media. Often, miraculous claims like Ayurvedic oil for hair regeneration in just 14 days, or homemade paste for curing dental problems instantly are devoid of strong scientific data. Consulting a healthcare professional is always your best bet when looking for an effective and safe treatment options for your specific condition.
