  • Fact Check: Video from Steven Spielberg movie set in Hollywood FALSELY shared as Nepal plane crash site AFWA's investigation, however, found that the video shows the sets of a Steven Spielberg movie, and not the site of the Nepal plane crash. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from the set of the 2005 Steven Spielberg movie “War of the Worlds” in Universal Studios Hollywood in California, United States. All 72 people who were on board the Yeti Airlines flight 691 that crashed in Nepal's Pokhara on January 15 are believed to have died. While the search for the last missing person continues, multiple images and videos of the wreckage have gone viral on social media. Among this is a video showing the sheer destruction purportedly caused by the plane crash. In the video, a mangled aircraft, several destroyed cars, and a wrecked home can be seen. The archived versions of similar posts can be seen here and here. AFWA’s investigation, however, found that the video shows the sets of a Steven Spielberg movie, and not the site of the Nepal plane crash. AFWA PROBE With the help of a reverse image search, we found the same video shared by an Instagram user in 2018. This post tagged “Universal Studios Hollywood” as the location of the video. Taking a cue from this, we did a keyword search and found a longer version of the same video uploaded to the YouTube channel “Theme Park Connect” on June 14, 2020. As per this channel, the video was from the location of Steven Spielberg's movie “War of the Worlds”, released in 2005. The description also said the site is still present at Universal Studios Hollywood in California, United States. “War of the Worlds” was a science fiction action film starring Tom Cruise and was adapted from the 1898 novel of the same name by HG Wells. We were also able to spot the same location in a clip from the “War of the Worlds” available on YouTube. Over the years, many people have posted photos from the same location on social media. The official website of Universal Studios also confirms that this location of “War of the Worlds” is part of its studio tour. We were also able to geolocate the site on Google Maps. It is adjacent to "Psycho House", the mansion from the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock thriller “Psycho”. The Yeti Airlines aircraft carrying 72 people plunged into a river gorge in Nepal’s Pokhara on January 15. While fragments of the plane scattered across the riverbank, it did not hit any homes. It is hence clear that the video in question is old and from the set of a Hollywood movie. It has nothing to do with the recent plane crash in Nepal.
