  • Fact Check: AI-generated images shared as Putin collapsing after suffering heart attack India Today's investigation revealed that the Russian President didn't suffer a heart attack and the images are AI-generated. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The images are generated with the help of artificial intelligence. Images showing purported videos of Russian President Vladimir Putin collapsing to the ground after suffering a heart attack have gone viral. Putin is seen falling over his hands and then finally collapsing. A Twitter user, sharing the supposed screenshot of the newspaper “The Moscow Times”, tweeted, “Putin suffers heart attack! South African ANC #BRICS.” The cover story in the screenshot is of Putin suffering a heart attack. The headline read: “President Putin suffers a heart attack." Another user, sharing two images of Putin collapsing, wrote: “Putin fell down. During late-night meetings with exsoviet members he collapsed and was helped back to his feet by aids. #Putin #PresidentPutin #Trump2024.” India Today’s investigation revealed that the images are not authentic and are generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). India Today Probe A close observation of the screenshot of the newspaper shows the date of publishing of the story to be May 12, 2023. We then went through the newspaper’s website to verify whether such a news was indeed published. However, we couldn’t find anything related to the viral news corresponding to May 12. We then ran a reverse image search that led us to a Twitter user, Misha Petrov. Petrov shared the viral two images on March 22, 2023, and wrote in Russian: “Putin fell during a meeting in the Kremlin.” In the thread that follows the tweet, he clarified: “The pictures are generated by artificial intelligence if anything.” The thread also had images that showed Putin collapsing to the ground. In his later tweets, he said that the images were generated using Midjourney, an AI art generator application. Using the application, he created similar images of Putin being arrested. As we checked for news reports of Putin suffering a heart attack, we couldn’t find any. The AI-generated images of Putin are being falsely shared with the claim that he collapsed due to a heart attack. Earlier as well, AI-generated photos of police arresting former US president Donald Trump went viral, with the claim that it was real.
